(Have a staff member lead the group in a song) What did he just do with the group? take suggestions He was actually controlling this group Why did most of the members go along with it? take comments What is the opposite of control? (CHAOS) Do you think we understand that as leaders? (No—but positive control is organizational—it allows progress!) Skillful control of a group will hardly be noticed by the members, and may even be enjoyed. What does the leader actually control? (Himself, things, but not other people) If the leader doesn’t control people then how can he control the group? (Lead, influence, persuade and direct)

  4. Notes on Control (spelled vertically): I’m going to suggest ways to use the word CONTROL to remember some important points when in front of a group. C-Close Inspection: Make sure you know what you want at the beginning, tell the group and hold them to it O-Observe:Do not hang over the group but be there to answer question and help with problems N-Needs: Do not forget the group’s needs. Keep the group together and get the job done. T-Teach: Give clear instructions so they can do it right. Let them use some of their own ideas. R-React: If they are doing well, “Tell Them”. If they are not doing well “Help Them”. O-Offer Help: Give a helping hand only when needed. L-Leave an Example: Your personal example is the best way to control a group.
