What:How is language expressive of a culture? -by continuing to learn the literary elements used by writers. -Today’s focus will be on tone and mood: 2 literary elements that affect the understanding of a text, particularly theme and our reaction to it. Why: Because these 2 literary elements affect the understanding of a text, particularly theme and our reaction to it.

  3. TONE Tone is the AUTHOR’S attitude towards the audience, the subject, or the character. *Tone is shown through • Dialogue - talking • Descriptions – author’s diction [word choice]

  4. MOOD *Moodis the feeling the reader gets from a story. *Mood is shown through • Setting • Atmosphere

  5. TONE IS NOT MOOD Tone The tone could be serious but the mood could be ridiculous. Mood

  6. TONE IS NOT MOOD • FOR EXAMPLE: He approached the task with sheer determination. He had studied his plans carefully, spent hours preparing and was sure of his approach. The hours he spent practicing were grueling and exhausting but he was ready. This was the year he would win the pie eating contest at school.

Serious, Intense, Formal, Focused Why: Words such as determination, grueling, and practicing show a serious attitude.

Playful, informal, silly, exciting WHY?: Because he is portrayed at being so serious for something not that important

  9. TRAILER ACTIVITY Before you start identifying mood and tone in texts on your own, we are going to do so together with films. Directors use lighting, music, and scene cuts to create a tone for a movie trailer. The way we feel as we watch the trailer is the mood. As you watch the trailers complete the worksheet you were given.
