  4. Fabrics • Not all fabrics can be laundered • Check the label in the clothing for more information • Some fabrics can be washed, but not dried • Some must be dry cleaned • Sort the fabrics by type

  5. Colors • Sort by similar colors • Some dyes will transfer to other pieces of clothing

  6. Group Discussion • Should fabric or color take priority when sorting?

  7. Washing Machine Cycles

  8. Water Temperature • Cold • More energy efficient • Prevents color bleeding • Prevents shrinking • Warm and Hot • More durable fabrics • Lighter colors

  9. Water Level • Water level • Small • Medium • Large • Clothes may not get clean if water level is too low

  10. Cycle • Most machines have different cycles: • Gentle • Regular • Heavy • Choose the cycle based upon the fabric

  11. Group Activity • In groups of three, discuss the problems that could arise from choosing the wrong water temperature, water level, or washer cycle.

  13. Detergents • Detergents are used for cleaning the laundry • Some detergents are made for specific items • Most detergents can be used for any types of clothing • Use appropriate amount for the load size

  14. Bleach • Use caution with bleach • Two types: • Bleach for whites only • Color-safe bleach

  15. Fabric Softener • Fabric softener helps to avoid static • Can be in liquid form or a dryer sheet • Some people do not use this

  16. Decision Making Activity • What decisions do you need to make about detergents and laundry additives? • What issues could arise if improper decisions are made?

  18. To Dry or Not to Dry? • Air Dry • Can prevent shrinking • Less energy is used • Dryer • Faster • Can shrink some fabrics • Clothes may feel softer
