  2. What is the fate and effect of nutrients entering the Western Basin during storm runoff events? To address these questions we conducted a Lagrangian study of this runoff event April 30, 2010 What is the relationship between the sediment loading events beginning March 1, 2010 and the satellite image of April 30, 2010? Where has most of the sediment been deposited? What has happened to the dissolved nutrients that accompanied the pulsed sediment loads? Where and how much mixing has occurred between Maumee storm event water and Detroit River inputs?

Between mid-February and early June: • About 6 km3 of water moved past Waterville and into the Western Basin • This water had an average flow-weighted dissolved reactive phosphorus concentration of about 0.087 mg/L. • This water had an average flow-weighted concentration of total phosphorus of 0.443 mg/L. • These water masses could occupy very large areas with the southern portion of the Western Basin and beyond.

  12. Project Status • We learned a lot during our pilot Lagrangian studies. • We have proposals in hand for expanding the studies. • Working with charter boat captains is a very efficient and effective way to conduct the sampling. • Need to interact with modelers to be sure the data collection programs meet the calibration needs of linked hydrodynamic-ecosystem models.
