  2. Background:What is a BHAG? • Big Hairy Audacious Goal • A BHAG is a clearly articulated goal that is reachable in 10 – 30 years • It should be clear, compelling,tangible, energizing and highly focused • People should “get it” right away, with no explanation

  3. BHAG Committee Goals • Receive feedback from every region - We need more volunteers! (A, C, D, I, J) • Communicate regularly with entire SWE membership - specifically through COR • Provide BHAG statement to assist with strategic plan revision • Create motion to pass at 2006 COR in Kansas City • Accept new BHAG as SWE’s vision!

  4. Last Year’s Brainstorming • Questions we asked: • What is the purpose of SWE? • What are we striving for as SWE members and leaders? • How can SWE impact what is happening in the world? • Feedback: • Region conferences • Received 276 ideas • Themes consistent • Let’s use this!

  5. BHAG • Current: To be the recognized authority on and advocate for, women in engineering • Motion 1: Transcend the need for the “W” in SWE • Amendment: Rise above the need for the “W” in SWE • Motion 2: To achieve and sustain parity for women in engineering • Idea: To increase the number of women in engineering • OTHER IDEAS!!! • We want to know what you think! • You are the key marketplace for ideas to create the BHAG!

  6. Course Correction • Your feedback is essential to a robust process • What do you like about the proposed BHAG? What don’t you like? • What do you like about the modified proposal? What don’t you like? • Where do YOU think SWE should be in 20-30 years?

  7. Timeline • Circulate BHAG communication to COR - February 24th • Communicate with SWE members at every region conference - May 7th • Post forum discussion - Month of April • Compile feedback and post preliminary choices for COR to comment on and vote - May 15th • Create BHAG and vivid descriptions - June 30th • Create motion for COR meeting at conference - August 1st

  8. Avenues For Communication… • Volunteer to participate on the BHAG committee • We want at least one representative from each region • COR • Region Governor or your ES FIG member, Marge Inden, m.inden@gmail.com • SWE forum in April • Please visit and post your thoughts • ES FIG leader - Lee Ann Schwope, lschwope@exceramaterials.com
