  2. GENERAL • Act responsibly, act maturely • Long pants and closed-toe shoes required in the shop at all times • No jewelry, no iPods • No food or drink

  3. GENERAL • Ring between Battery + and Car Frame • 600 to 1000 amps of current

  4. GENERAL • Keep the shop tidy • A tidy shop is a safe shop • NO tools left on the floor • Clean up ALL spills ASAP • Paper Towel • Soap and water • Floor Dry • Solvent

  5. GENERAL • Oily rags and oil-soaked paper towels MUST be placed in red metal bins • Fire hazard

  6. CHEMICALS • Long term toxic effects • Cancer • Dermatitis/Eczema • Wear safety equipment: • Eye protection • Skin protection • Lung protection

  7. CHEMICALS • NO chemicals dumped on the ground • NO chemicals dumped down the sink • This includes (but is not limited to): • Oil • Brake Fluid • Paint • Solvent • Antifreeze • Gasoline

  8. FIRE SAFETY • Avoid sparks • Battery: Hydrogen! • Fuel system: Duh! • Never look down the intake of a running engine • Note where the extinguishers are located (3) • Aim at the BASE of the fire

  9. SHOP POWER • Know where the Emergency Power Buttons are (4) • Kill the power in an emergency • Protect the person • Stop the machine

  10. POWER & TEST EQUIPMENT • READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!! • Don’t damage yourself • Don’t damage the machine • All power tools and air tools require eye protection • Unplug machines before adjusting them • KNOW how to use the machine – ASK!! • It is my job to teach you how to do this!

  12. HOISTS • ALWAYS have someone guide you on the ramps • ALWAYS have the rails UNDER the vehicle • ALWAYS place in Park (auto) or Gear (manual)

  13. HOIST • ALWAYS set the emergency brake • ALWAYS use wheel chocks

  14. HOIST • ALWAYS have me check the rail placement BEFORE you drop the ramps • ALWAYS Call “Going up” or “Going down” when raising or lowering • ALWAYS keep doors, hood, trunk closed • ALWAYS mechanically lock the hoist • NEVER walk around ON a raised hoist

  16. HOISTS WE DON’T HAVE • Two post • Great for doing tires, brakes and suspension • BUT: get the weight distribution right!

  17. FLOOR JACKS • ALWAYS use jack stands • Get me to check jack and stand placement to avoid vehicle damage • ALWAYS leave the handle UP

RUNNING ENGINES • ALWAYS use exhaust extractor, all three bay doors open, or run car outside • Carbon Monoxide is DEADLY • Caution around the hot parts, spinning fan blades and moving belts • Electric fans can start at any time • Fans can cut your finger off • Belts & Pulleys will twist your finger off

  20. HOT ENGINES • NEVER remove the radiator cap from a hot engine • Coolant under pressure will instantly boil • Spray all over the place • Scald and/or Burn

  21. BATTERY SAFETY • NO JEWELERY! • High current = SEVERE BURNS!!! • NEVER leave tools on the battery • Spark + Hydrogen = BOOM!! • Wash acid off with water

  22. BATTERY SAFETY • When removing: • Disconnect GROUND (-) cable FIRST • Connect GROUND (-) cable LAST • Otherwise, if the wrench slips…. BOOM!

  23. JUMP STARTING A CAR • Do not let cars touch • Connect negative to DEAD car LAST, somewhere on the FRAME or ENGINE BLOCK • Remove negative from DEAD car FIRST
