  3. Church Design • Narthex is the front part of the Church • Contains icons to kiss and candles people light while saying a short prayer • Candles symbolize Jesus as the light of the world • Non-Orthodox people are to remain in the Narthex out of respect • Nave is the central part of the Church • In traditional Greek churches there are no pews because the worshipers are to stand before God • Many Greek Orthodox Churches (especially in the USA) now contain pews, however, people still stand for long portions of the service

  4. Church Design Continued • Iconostasis: called the τεμπλον ( pronounced templon)- a screen or set of doors between the nave and the sanctuary • Contains large icons, usually one of Jesus, one of Mary holding Jesus, one of the saint whom the church is named after and one of John the Baptist- central figures of the church • Doors are only to be used by the clergy members

  5. Church Design Continued • Sanctuary (altar): only to be entered by the clergy • Women may not enter • Usually square • Contains a table, on which the communion is prepared before being brought out • Money and animal products not allowed in • Large cross usually hangs on the wall, with Jesus’ body on it

You are to make the sign of the cross and then kiss their hand

  9. Icons Continued • Icons are filled with symbolism • Tell about the people depicted in them • No statues • Icons are often lit by candles • Symbolizes Jesus as the light of the world • Walls of churches are covered with icons • Icons were also taken on journeys as protection
