  3. Slide 2: What is Memorial Day? A day for remembering and honoring all the American soldiers who died while serving for their nation the United States of America. At present, Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May every year and is a federal holiday.

  4. Slide- 3: The Decoration Day The Memorial Day was originally known as the Decoration Day. The first Memorial Day was observed on May 30th, 1868. The day of observance was proclaimed by Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic. Initially, Memorial Day was started to honor the military personnel who sacrificed their lives in the Civil War from 1861-1865. In the first Decoration Day, 5000 participants joined in decorating the graves of 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

Slide 4: Timeline of Events May 5, 1866 – Waterloo was the first to celebrate the Memorial Day in honor of the soldiers died in the Civil War. 1868 – Official proclamation of May 30th, 1868 as the Memorial Day. 1868 – The US Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act with the proposal to make last Monday in May as Memorial Day. 1868 – The purpose of the proposal was to create a three-day weekend holiday for federal employees. 1873 - New York was the first among all to designate Memorial Day as a legal holiday. 1966 - The US federal government declared Waterloo and New York to be the official birthplace of Memorial Day. 1971 – The change in terms of shifting Memorial Day from 30th May to last Monday in May comes into effect. 2000 - President Bill Clinton designates 3:00 p.m. local time to be the National Moment of Remembrance in every Memorial Day.

  6. Slide 5: What led to the observance of Memorial Day? It came into effect as a response to the death of 620,000 soldiers during the Civil War. The massive loss of life led to the emergence of spontaneous commemorations for those who lost their lives. The aftermath of the War led to the establishment of the country’s first ever national crematory ground. Americans all across various states and towns started to conduct local observance by holding springtime tributes for the fallen soldiers

  7. Memorial Day Traditions The United States host parades across cities and towns on the Memorial Day. Many military personnel and leaders take part in the Memorial Day parade. Americans visit cemeteries and memorials. People decorate the graves with flowers and candles.
