Larijani • Mehdi Yari • S. H. Haji Hosseini • Majid Eshghabadi Published online: 22 March 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2011 Abstract In this project the effect of nitrogen ion implantation on the corrosion resistance of Ti6Al4V alloy is studied. Nitrogen ions are implanted with four fluences from 8 9 1017 to 5 9 1018 ions/cm2 in the Ti6Al4V sub- strates. The effect of ion implantation on surface mor- phology and roughness is investigated with Atomic Force Microscopy. X-ray diffraction is used for phase analysis of the samples and as a result Ti2N(105) in the fluence of 1 9 1018 ions/cm2 and TiN in fluence of 2 9 1018 ions/cm2 are observed. For corrosion resistance analysis in one molar sulfuric acid a potansiostate device is used and the best corrosion resistance is obtained for the fluence 2 9 1018 ions/cm2. Moreover corrosion resistance variation is explained by microstructure considerations. Keywords Nitrogen ion implantation Ti6Al4V Corrosion resistance Roughness A. Ti6Al4V properties are very attractive in vacuum devices using in hot plasma facility [5, 6]. Due to Ti6Al4V bio consistency with blood and high corrosion resistance has been vastly used in medical pro- cedures like the human joints, broken bone planes, teeth root implantations and jaw replacements and has began a new chapter in the history of hard artificial spares [7–9]. Material processing using ion beams is the result of high energy, from several keV to a few MeV, ion collision to the surface and penetration into the solid surface. Substantial effect of this process becomes clear by investigation of enormous variation of material properties due to presence of impurity atoms embedded by ion beam [10]. Mechani- cal, electrical, optical, magnetic and superconductivity are among the properties that depend extensively to these external atoms [11–13]. Using high energy ions we can impose a wide range of properties to the solid material by importing a variety of atoms independent of thermody- namic factors and certain concentration and distributions that cannot be easily obtained in other ways. Formation of TiN phase on the surface of Ti6Al4V by ion beam processing can be achieved [14]. TiN phase and other ceramic compositions modify corrosion resistance properties of the material surface [15, 16]. Currently most concerns on ion beam processes is sub- jected to the ion implantation studies, ion beam mixing, phase transition due to ion implantation and surface cov- ering with ion beams. These interests with the possibility of creating new materials that have vast application in semi- conductors, corrosion and scratch resistance or may offer different electrical and optical properties are growing 123
