  1. FAMILIES on the Periodic Table • Grouped based on chemicalproperties. • Given a specific name • Elements in each family reactdifferently with other elements.

  2. Label the Groups • http://www.chemicool.com/

  3. Periods of the Periodic Table • As you go across to the right, they become less metallic.

  4. Labe the Periods • http://www.chemicool.com/

  5. ALKALI METALSPlace BlackDotson this first row Group 1 • Place black dots all the way down the first row on the left • Soft and silvery metals • Very reactive, esp. with water • Conduct electricity • Hydrogen is not a member, it is a non-metal

  6. ALKALINE EARTH METALSHorizontal Lines Group 2 • Place horizontal lines all the way down the second row • White and malleable • Reactive, but less than Alkali metals • Conduct electricity

  7. TRANSITION METALSDiagonal Lines Groups in the middle • Place diagonal lines in all the shaded part in the picture to the left. • Good conductors of heat and electricity. • Some are used for jewelry. • Can bond with many elements in a variety of shapes.

  8. HalogensSmall Brown Circles Group 7 • Place small BROWN circles in the next to last row on the right. • All are non-metals • Very reactive are often bonded with elements from Group 1

  9. Noble GasesSmall Brown Squares Group 8 • Place small BROWN squares in the last row on the right. • Gases • Non-metals • Not reactive with other elements

  10. Rare Earth MetalsLanthanides: RedActinides: Green • Color the lanthanides red. This is the top row of the blue. • Color the actinides lime green. This is the bottom row of the blue. • Some are Radioactive (emits energy from being unstable) • Conduct electricity L a n t h a n I d e s A c t i n i d e s

  11. Color the Non-Metals Blue • Non metals have the same properties

  12. Color the Metals Pink • Metals have the same properties

  13. Color the Metalloids Dark Green • Metals have the properties of both metals and non-metals

  14. Whiteboards: Name Those Elements • Group 14, Period 2 • Group 11, period 4 • Group 2, Period 2 • Group 17, Period 3 • Group 1, Period 18
