  3. Graduation Needs • 22 Credits • Counselors have reviewed transcripts and student will have needed courses in their schedule or planned for Credit Recovery • Debts/Fees • Have a plan for after graduation

  4. Graduation Needs • Individual Senior meetings will begin on 9-16-2019 • Counselors and students work on the plan for the school year as well as develop/refine the student’s plan for after graduation

  5. Graduation Needs • Check your name! Investigate the spelling of your name on your schedule or PowerSchool – this is the spelling we have on file and will be on your diploma • If something appears off or needs correction, get your paperwork in to Mr. Proctor right away!

  6. Military • Recruiters from each branch of the military are at North Forsyth at least quarterly • ASVAB will be given in October – Date to be announced soon! • Sign-up sheet will be by Ms. McManus’ office • Will be given again in April • ASVAB scores help determine eligibility for branches and jobs availability • Air Force: 36 • Army: 31 • Marines: 31 • Navy: 35

  7. Career • WorkKeys certification • 4 or more classes in a career concentration • Awards Day recognition and looks great on resume when looking for a job • Mock interviews available • Training programs at Goodwill

  8. Deadlines deadlines deadlines!! Senior year is full of stress….. Most of it’s good stress! Have a reliable calendar app on your phone (that you actually use and check) Coursework, senior dates, job interviews, SAT/ACT, ASVAB, scholarships, college application deadlines Let people around you know what you need – and don’t wait to do so!

  9. How To: Apply to College

College Selection Research colleges and decide where you want to apply. • Things to consider: • The college’s location • The college’s cost (tuition, fees, etc.) • The majors that are offered • Admission requirements (GPA, ACT/SAT scores, etc.) • The athletic teams and extra-curricular activities available. • NC Public Universities now require a minimum 2.5 GPA and SAT combined score of 880 (Reading and Math) or ACT score of 17

  12. Finalize your list of colleges • After you have completed your research, make a final list of colleges to which you will apply. • Your final list should include a variety of different colleges, including your preferred school(s) and at least one “safe” school.

Complete and Submit Applications • Online Applications • Most colleges prefer that you apply online. • Apply to NC schools online by going to www.cfnc.org • Most colleges also have an online application available on their website. • Also see Common App (commonapp.org) and Common Black College App (commonblackcollegeapp.com)

  14. The Application Essay Many colleges require that you submit an essay with your application. Read the essay question on the application carefully to make sure that your essay completely answers the question. English teachers are willing to assist students with college application essays. Crosby Scholars offers essay writing assistance

  15. High School Transcripts You will need to have an official copy of your high school transcript sent to each college to which you are applying. Complete a Transcript Request Card in Student Services each time you need to send a transcript only if the school is out of state The first two transcripts are free and each additional one is $2. If you apply online using the CFNC website, transcripts will be sent electronically.

  16. The College Application Letters of Recommendation Some colleges will ask that you submit at least one letter of recommendation Letters of recommendation can be from a teacher, a counselor, or a work supervisor. Be sure to ask for a recommendation at least 2 weeks before the deadline!

  17. The Application Fee Most colleges require that you pay a non-refundable application fee when you submit your application. This fee is usually between $25 and $75. The college’s website or application will tell you how to pay the fee. College Board Application Fee Waivers are available IF you use a fee waiver when you register for the SAT. Most institutions, but not all, will accept the application fee waiver.

  22. The College Application SAT/ACT Scores If you apply to a 4-year college you will need to submit your SAT or ACT scores. If you have not yet taken either of these tests register now to take one as soon as possible. On your SAT/ACT registration, be sure to specify which colleges you want to receive your scores.

  25. SAT/ACT Fee Waivers Students who meet the family income guidelines from College Board (SAT) and/or ACT may receive fee waivers. Students are limited to 2 waivers during their Junior and Senior years. An income eligibility form verifying eligibility for free/reduced meals is required for receipt of a SAT and/or ACT fee waivers. Students receiving an SAT fee waiver also qualify to receive4 College Application Fee Waivers and 4 additional score reports.

NCAA Eligibility Center • Registration required for all student athletes who plan to participate in varsity sports at the collegiate level • Register online at www.eligibilitycenter.org • Registration fee is $80; Fee Waiver available if one was used for the SAT or ACT (See your counselor in Student Services)

FAFSA FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID • Information is used first by institution to determine eligibility for aid • Apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov • Apply beginning Oct. 1 • What do you need? • FSA ID for online application – GET NOW! One for student and one for parent. • Tax information for year 2017 • Parent Social Security Number & Student Social Security # • Driver’s License Number if you have one • Alien Registration number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)

North Forsyth High Scholarship Process • Advertisement – Scholarship Newsletters • Email service to students and parents • Paper copies kept in Student Services • Posted on school website • Applications • Paper or Online • Paper applications can be picked up in Student Services • For select competitive scholarships, see Ms. Mickey to apply. These are decided by the Scholarship Committee.
