Boston Based Dermatologist Joe Girouard Shares Some Essential Skincare Tips For Seniors Joe Girouard is one of the top dermatologists in Boston specializing in the treatment of a wide range of dermatologic ailments, like acne, eczema, psoriasis, warts, rosacea, etc. He also offers a variety of cosmetic procedures, such as dermal filler, botox, laser skin tightening, stretch mark removal, and acne scar treatment. Girouard has been a part of several national and International conferences, & has written a number of articles published in various prominent peer-reviewed journals. During one of his recent online sessions, Joe Girouard shared some essential skincare tips for the elderly. But before that, he explained in detail how your skin naturally ages along with you. He said that as you age, the production of collagen & elastin slows down that causes your skin to lose elasticity. The skin also tends to become more fragile and thinner; glands lose their ability to moisturize the skin; and it is therefore common for seniors to have dry skin. Apart from the natural effects of aging, the environment too plays a critical role in how your skin ages. For example, harsh weather conditions or too much exposure to the sun may cause the skin to age faster. The ethnicity and heredity of a person are also some of the deciding factors in how their skin ages. According to Joe Girouard, seniors need to be sun-smart by using a good quality sunscreen with SFP 15 or more, whenever they out in the sun. It is also advisable to stay indoors during the daytime (10 am to 4 pm) when UV rays are the strongest. Besides that, it is important to keep the skin moisturized to prevent skin problems, like dryness, cracking, itchiness, etc. As your skin becomes extremely sensitive as you age, you should use mild cleansers instead of harsh soaps or alcohol-based products. Also, eating a well-balanced diet, drinking lots of water, and quitting bad habits like smoking go a long way in ensuring a healthy, youthful skin in old age.
