  1. Probation: Vocabulary Introduction

  2. Probation- A disposition in which the defendant avoids time in prison by agreeing to comply with the orders of the Court.

  3. Probation Officer- A county or Federal employee who reports to the Courts and supervises defendants released on probation.

  4. Investigation: Inquiry of criminal behavior to gather evidence and prosecute offenders.

  5. Pre-Sentence Report- Report prepared by the Probation Department containing a description of the offense and the defendant.

  6. Sentence- the punishment determined by a judge for a defendant who committed a crime.

  7. Rehabilitation- Idea that criminals can be cured of their problems and can be returned to society.

  8. Incarceration- They physical confinement of a person in a jail or prison.

  9. Restitution- An order for a criminal to pay back or compensate the victims of their crimes.
