Paul Hewitt Video Clip Be prepared to discuss the video clip.
Work with your shoulder partner to draw black body curves for the following stars Yellow Blue-white White Blue Orange red Label the x-axis as wavelength and the y-axis as Luminosity in Suns. The lines you draw should correspond with the color of the star. Make a key that shows the names of the stars. Record the temperature (K) at the peak of your line. Drawing Blackbody Curves
Temperature and EM radiation • Hotter objects emit different EM radiation than cooler objects • Hotter objects will emit shorter wavelength EM and cooler objects • Think about what you know about wavelength of EM and its energy—why does this make sense?
The temperature of a star is evidenced by its • Color • Brightness • Angular momentum • Rate of burning • Distance
The brightest color emitted by the sun is • Blue-green • Orange • Red • Yellow-green • Violet
Applications of the connection between temperature and EM radiation • Infrared ear thermometers • Infrared thermometers
Galaxies There are 3 basic types of galaxies Spiral Elliptical Irregular These three types were identified by Edwin Hubble
The Milky Way is • An irregular galaxy • An elliptical galaxy • A spiral galaxy
Ticket Out • Explain the connection between temperature and color. • Draw 3 basic types of galaxies. Circle the type we live in (the Milky Way Galaxy)
