Success Today Means You create a half page analysis of Twain’s essay. What your response should include • Twain’s purpose for writing (tied into the genre of writing he chose) • His audience (elite thinkers can prove how we know his audience based on what he assumes they know) • His persona (and the evidence to prove it) • His message and how he creates it (use several EXAMPLES from the text to show his message)

Am Lit DO NOW 2/5/14 • Take a topic list from the basket • Circle 3 topics that interest you. • If you think of a possible topic, raise your hand and get it approved by me. • On a separate sheet of paper: • In 2-3 sentences take a stance on each issue and give a reason why you think that way • You should have an opinion and a reason for each circled topic.
Success Today Means • You have narrowed your possible topics down to a manageable few. • You have taken an “initial stance” on your topics. • You have at least one reason for each initial stance. • You brainstorm what you think or know about your possible topics. One page per topic. Must have three topics brainstormed. • PERMISSION SLIP GETS SIGNED AND RETURNED

Success Today 2/6/14 • If not committed to a topic, then narrow topic down to two • Develop an initial research question or working thesis statement • Identify what type of information you will need for your topic in order to develop a research paper.
Terms to define • Research question: open-ended question that guides the research. • How does texting change the way people interact? • Why do European students attain fewer As than US students? • Working Thesis: states a position on a topic that you are trying to prove through evidence and can be changed during the research process • Felons should have the right to vote. • Beauty contests serve no purpose in society.
