BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT EPHESIANS 5:1-20
A SERIES OF CONTRASTS THE WAY OF LOVE (5:1-2) vs. IMMORALITY (5:3-7).
EPH. 5:1-2 “Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children…” “Live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”
Michael Chriswell “What would you prefer, for your son Tyler to never do anything wrong and to perfectly follow your every rule and command, but to show you no real love and affection, or would you prefer an imperfect son who makes mistakes often, but who comes running and screaming, “Daddy, daddy, daddy,” when that garage door opens?”
A SERIES OF CONTRASTS THE WAY OF LOVE (5:1-2) vs. IMMORALITY (5:3-7). LIGHT vs. DARKNESS (5:8-14).
Eph. 5:8 “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light…”
A SERIES OF CONTRASTS THE WAY OF LOVE (5:1-2) vs. IMMORALITY (5:3-7). LIGHT vs. DARKNESS (5:8-14). WISDOM vs. FOOLISHNESS (5:15-17).
Eph. 5:15-16 “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”
Eph. 5:17 “Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”
A SERIES OF CONTRASTS THE WAY OF LOVE (5:1-2) vs. IMMORALITY (5:3-7). LIGHT vs. DARKNESS (5:8-14). WISDOM vs. FOOLISHNESS (5:15-17). FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT vs. FILLED WITH (DRUNK ON) WINE (5:18-20).
Eph. 5:18 “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”
Eph. 5:19 “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord.”
Eph. 5:20 “Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Eph. 5:18a “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery.” There are 20 million alcoholics in America. 3 ½ million are teenage alcoholics. 40% of violent deaths are alcohol related. 50% of traffic fatalities are alcohol related.
THE KEY “Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” Everything else hangs on this one command.
Colossians 3:16 In the parallel passage in Colossians he says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…” These 2 phrases seem to be used synonymously.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…” “Be filled with the Spirit.”
John MacArthur “Outside of the command for unbelievers to trust Christ for salvation there is no more practical and necessary command in Scripture than the one for believers to be filled with the Spirit.”
Billy Graham “Ninety percent (90%) of Christians live defeated lives.”
Charles Finney “Christians are as guilty for not being filled with the Holy Spirit as sinners are for not repenting.”
I have some questions, 1. WHY? It is COMMANDED. “Keep on being filled with the Spirit (Lit.), it is present, passive, imperative.
2. WHAT? Spirit Filling = Spirit Control All areas of life are to be under His control. Cp. Eph. 5:19-6:20 and Gal. 5:22-23.
3. HOW? How can I be filled? A. DESIRE IT. Matt.5:6– “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
3. HOW? B. CONFESS YOUR SINS. 1 John 1:9– “If we confess our sins He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
3. HOW? C. PRESENT EVERY AREA OF LIFE TO GOD. Romans 12:1– “I urge you brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.”
3. HOW? D. ASK GOD TO FILL / CONTROL YOU. 1 John 5:14-15– “…If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us—whatever we ask –we know that we have what we asked of Him.”
HOW? A. DESIRE IT B. CONFESS SINS C. PRESENT YOURSELF TO GOD D. ASK GOD TO FILL/CONTROL YOU

4. WHO ARE YOU? A. NATURAL PERSON= “The man without the Spirit” (1 Cor. 2:14).
WHO ARE YOU? B. WORLDLY= 1 Cor. 3:1– “I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly – mere infants in Christ.”
WHO ARE YOU? c. SPIRITUAL= 1 Cor. 2:15-16 – “The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man’s judgment…but we have the mind of Christ.”
WHO ARE YOU? NATURAL MAN WORLDLY SPIRITUAL
WHO ARE YOU? Being filled (controlled) by the Holy Spirit can be likened to the wings of an eagle. Eagles who don’t use their wings will crash. Spread your wings—Put off the old self, Put on the new self—but do it in the power of the Holy Spirit.
