  1. MECH448 QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering MECH448 Compressible Fluid Flow Mini-Reports - 2011

  2. MECH448 The purpose of the mini-report is to illustrate some of the real-world applications in which compressibility effects are important. A list of mini-report topics is given below, each topic being assigned a number. A list indicating the mini-report topic by number that has been allocated to each student in the class is given following the list of topics. Each of the listed topics has been allocated to two or three students. Students allocated the same topic may work together in gathering the required information but each student must submit their own mini-report.

  3. MECH448 This report should be roughly between two and six pages in length and may include figures (e.g., downloaded photographs and diagrams) and should reference the books, web-pages, etc. from which information was obtained. Most of the information required to write the mini-reports is available on the web. Please contact me if you experience difficulty in finding enough information on your assigned topic to allow you to write your mini-report. The mini-reports must be submitted in the MECH448 course box in McLaughlin Hall.

  4. MECH448 If your name is not on the list please contact me as soon as possible.

  5. MECH448 • Mini-Report Topics - 2011 • 1.Discuss the engine air intake system (the inlet diffuser) used in the Concorde supersonic airliner. • 2. Discuss the engine air intake system (the inlet diffuser) used in the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird aircraft. • Discuss the engine air intake system (the inlet diffuser) used in the Avro Arrow. • 4. Discuss the engine air intake system (the inlet diffuser) used in the CF-18 aircraft. • Discuss the engine air intake system (the inlet diffuser) used in the 1960’s British aircraft, the English Electric Lightning. • Discuss the engine air intake system (the inlet diffuser) used in the F-106 Delta Dart aircraft.

  6. MECH448 7. Discuss the engine air intake system (the inlet diffuser) used in the B-1 Lancer aircraft. 8. Discuss the engine air intake system (the inlet diffuser) used in the B-58 Hustler aircraft. 9. Discuss the engine air intake system (the inlet diffuser) used in the CF-104 aircraft 10. Discuss the engine air intake system (the inlet diffuser) used in the Mirage III aircraft 11. Discuss the engine air intake system (the inlet diffuser) used in theEurofighter Typhoonaircraft 12. Discuss the engine air intake system (the inlet diffuser) used in theF-35 aircraft

  7. MECH448 13. Discuss how a Pulse-Jet engine works. 14. Discuss air intake systems that have been used or proposed for use with RAMJET and SCRAMJET engines. 15. Discuss what is meant by a blast wave and how it can be analysed. 16. Discuss what is mean by a condensation shock. 17. Discuss what is meant by a combustion wave. 18. Select and describe an existing high performance shock tube. 19. Select and describe an existing supersonic wind-tunnel fitted with a variable area nozzle. 20. Select and describe an existing blow-down supersonic wind-tunnel.

  8. MECH448 21. Describe the nozzle fitted to the main engine on the Space Shuttle. 22. Describe the reentry thermal protection system fitted to the Apollo space craft. 23. Describe the reentry thermal protection system fitted to the Mercury spacecraft. 24. Describe the reentry thermal protection system fitted to the Space Shuttle. 25. Discuss the causes of the relatively recent fatal accident involving the Space Shuttle, which occurred over Texas during the return to earth following a mission. 26. Explain what was meant by the “Sound Barrier” and discuss how the “Sound Barrier” was first broken, i.e., how supersonic flight was first achieved.

  9. MECH448 27. Discuss why sweptback wings are used on aircraft 28. Discuss why variable sweepback wings are used on some aircraft. 29. With regard to transonic aircraft, discuss what is meant by the “area rule” and how it is applied. 30. Discuss the X-1 aircraft, the first aircraft to fly supersonically in level flight. Describe how this aircraft was propelled and how it was launched. 31. A system has been proposed by a British research group in which air, carrying small amounts of a liquid that is to be injected into a person, is accelerated to a supersonic speed and then impinges on the skin. The liquid then passes through the skin with little or no sensation of pain occurring. Describe this system.

  10. MECH448 32. Discuss what is meant by an afterburner and discuss the type of nozzle usually fitted at the exit from an afterburner. 33. During the early testing of space suits an astronaut in a capsule was carried to a high altitude by a balloon. The astronaut then jumped from the capsule and, after falling for a relative long time, deployed a parachute and landed safely back on earth. During the period of free-fall the astronaut is believed to have exceeded the speed of sound. An attempt has recently been made to repeat this experience. Discuss these actual and proposed flights. 34. Discuss how a pipe organ works. 35. A wheeled vehicle relatively recently exceeded the speed of sound for the first time. Describe this vehicle and how it was powered.

  11. MECH448 36. Discuss a real case in which a building was damaged by an aircraft flying at supersonic speed over the building (e.g., a terminal building at Ottawa airport). 37. Discuss what causes thunder and why people are sometimes knocked over by thunder. 38. Discuss Ernst Mach’s studies in the field of compressible flow. 39. Discuss the purpose of and design of blast doors.
