  2. Value Proposition • Need • Approach • Benefits • Competition

  3. NEED:Why art? • “The arts offer a way of thinking unavailable in other disciplines.”(Harvard Project Zero 2001) • Art was deemed one of the core subjects to be taught in schools. (GOALS 2000: Educate America Act) • Art can supplement, if not surpass, the spoken word as a medium of communication.(International Child Art Foundation 2001)

  4. NEED:Absence of Art • Importance of art is marginalized in education. • “None of the arts standards was rated as ‘necessary’ or ‘probably necessary’ to learn prior to high school graduation.”(Chapman 2000) • Viewed as an extracurricular activity(Davis 1999) • Teachers are not trained to teach art. • Funding for art education is lacking.

  5. APPROACH ARTiFACT is a web-based, art education program designed for self-study or within a group. It consists of three parts: • Concepts - introduction to art and relevant subject concepts • Hands-on - activity to experience concepts • Share and Reflect – an opportunity to share self-expression and reflect on the experience

  6. APPROACH • Integration of arts into the everyday curriculum • Exploration of arts through an interactive, cross-curricular process • Representation of experts’ creative, expressive process • Construction of knowledge • Collaboration of students to incorporate multiple perspectives on one concept • Reflection on learning

  7. BENEFITS • Access & Ease – Allow teachers and students greater access to art education experiences in an easy to use fashion • Sharing - Allow children to share their own understanding of a concept with other students and respond to others • Learning through experience - Allow children to develop their own examples to reflect their understanding of a concept

  8. COMPETITION • Eduweb – Provides ideas for hands-on activities, lesson plans, biographies, art glossary, and games • Arts EdNet – Offers lesson plans, curriculum ideas, a guide to teaching and learning art, assessment strategies, online talk community, and virtual galleries • ArtsEdge – Presents creative and appropriate ways to use technology as a tool for teaching and learning art • Arts in Action – Supplies schools with a curriculum and training for volunteers to teach art in school
