What is Crime Prevention • Crime Prevention is the technique of reducing • or eliminating opportunities for crime. • It is easy to learn and to apply. • It can be your second nature.
CRIME PREVENTION CONCEPT • Police takes a proactive approach towards crime prevention. • Rationale: prevention is always better than cure. • Crime is preventable as many crimes are opportunistic in nature and attributable to victim’s negligence or carelessness. • Police cannot prevent crime alone. Therefore the community has the shared responsibility of crime prevention.

PREVENTABLE CRIMES- Robbery in Homes HOW IT HAPPENS • Acts as a government official or salesman to gain entry into homes • Confronting victims who are about to enter or leave home • Enter or force in through unsecured doors or other entrance
PREVENTABLE CRIMES- Robbery in Homes PREVENTIVE MEASURES • Keep the grille gates locked at all times • Never open the door to strangers • Identify visitors through the door viewer • Keep the chain latch of the door fastened when talking to the visitor • Check the stranger’s particulars • Call the Police if in doubt call “999”
PREVENTABLE CRIMES- Robbery in lifts HOW IT HAPPENS • Loitering at lift landings to ambush the victim. • Using distraction methods of • Accusing victims of staring, causing annoyance, or starting a quarrel. • claiming to be a relative or friend before bringing them to a secluded place to rob them of their valuables. • Asking for road directions, time, assistance, and taking the opportunity to rob you. • Directing your attention to stains or dirt (such as ketchup or ice-cream stains) on your clothes and taking the opportunity to rob you.
PREVENTABLE CRIMES- Robbery in Lifts PREVENTIVE MEASURES • Plan your route and avoid dark and deserted places. • Be wary of strangers following you or loitering at the lift landing and void decks. • Avoid taking the lift with any suspicious stranger. Arrange for someone to escort you when returning home late.

Press the “DOOR OPEN” button to exit if any stranger rushes in. • Avoid wearing excessive jewellery or carrying large amounts of cash. • If confronted, surrender your valuables on demand one at a time and try to remember any distinct features of the culprit.

PREVENTABLE CRIMES- Snatch Theft PREVENTIVE MEASURES • Avoid short-cuts through dark or deserted areas • Look out for suspicious person • Carry your sling bag in front of you, or clasp it firmly under your arm • Never leave your bag unattended, especially in crowded places • Always walk facing the oncoming traffic

PREVENTABLE CRIMES- Theft of / from Vehicles PREVENTIVE MEASURES • Park the vehicle in a well lit area • Do not leave valuables inside the vehicle • Secure windows and doors of the vehicle at all times • Install an alarm system • Report any strangers loitering or tampering with vehicles in the carpark
PREVENTABLE CRIMES- Outraging of Modesty WHERE IT CAN HAPPENS • At lifts, corridors, dark and lonely places • On public transport, e.g. buses, MRT trains etc. • Crowded places, e.g. bazaar, concerts, star performances, etc.

Press “DO” when a stranger rushes in as the door is closing and step out immediately. • Let the stranger take the lift and you wait for the next one • Do not nap or sleep when using public transport • Alert other passengers or seek help from driver if you are disturbed by someone
Summary • Every resident needs to play an active role in crime • prevention as Police cannot be everywhere. • Together, we can help make Singapore a safer home for all • as Crime Prevention is A Shared Responsibility.
