  3. Starter • How can an author create a feeling that something scary is about to happen? • Think about the use of: • Weather/Nature • Sounds • Sight (light, dark, shadows, etc) • Feeling (temperature, touch, etc) • Smell

  4. Let’s read chapter 1 of the novel (to page 11).

  5. TASK • Using pages 4 – 11, find two words or phrases (quotes) that you find interesting or mysterious. • Make sure you know how to explain your choices.

  7. Let’s finish reading chapter 1 of the novel

  8. Questions to Consider • What do you make of the writing on the board? What does it mean? • What signs are there in the chapter that something odd is happening?
