Newcastle Geothermal Area • Southeast edge of Escalante Valley, Iron Co. • Four Commercial Greenhouses • Potted plants, cut flowers, tomatoes • Two Operators – Milgro Newcastle and Castle Valley GH • ~ 25 Acres under cover • 6 – 7 production wells, ~ 500 – 600 ft deep, ~ 180 – 200°F • Fluid disposal in 4 percolation ponds and 3 injection wells

Milgro Newcastle, Inc. • Largest producer of chrysanthemums • One of nation’s largest producers of Dutch bulb crops – irises, tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and potted calla lilies • Currently produces 13 million potted plants and cut flowers annually • Recently acquired Royal Van Zanten, a leading producer of cuttings, and now ships 30 million cuttings a year to other growers

Roosevelt Hot Springs KGRA • The Pacificorp Blundell plant was dedicated in 1984 and has improved plant efficiency, but no expansion since then (26 MW gross) • Pacificorp (Utah Power) owns/operates Blundell plant • Intermountain Geothermal Co. operates well field • Purchase of Pacificorp was announced on May 24 by MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co. (~ $9.4 billion)

Pacificorp Purchase Effect on Blundell? • Intermountain Geothermal Company (field operator) • IGC is a component of California Energy Company, • CEC is a subsidiary of MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co. (80% owned by Berkshire Hathaway Inc.) • Plant operation and field development combined • Estimates of 50 to 100 MW sustainable output from RHS

Bonnett Geothermal Power PlantCove Fort – Sulphurdale KGRA • Plant and field purchased in 2004 by Recurrent/AMP Resources from UMPA/Provo City • Preliminary plans include reconstruction of power station by a 30 – 40 MW Kalina cycle plant (ammonia and water) • Development waiting on power purchase agreement and pending offering of federal leases on national forest land • Operation suspended

Crystal Hot Springs - Bluffdale • Point-of-the-Mountain at Bluffdale, Salt Lake County; Flowing thermal springs fill several ponds, surface temp of ~ 135°F, subsurface temp ~ 195°F • Current Users - • Bluffdale Flowers greenhouses (250,000 ft2, roses) • Formerly Utah Roses, began in early 1980s; plans to expand to 500,000 ft2 (11 ½ ac.) • Oquirrh 4 minimum security dormitory at State Prison • Hi-Tech Fisheries (tropical fish, Lake Malawi, GRV Africa)

Space & Water Heating at Utah State Prison • In 2003, UDOC contracted Johnson Controls (ESCO) for improved management of energy, water, and waste (performance based) • Included re-establishing geothermal heating system for Oquirrh 4 facility • GT heating system in 1983-85 failed due to scale and corrosion • Oquirrh 4 complex Phase I: ~ 39,000 ft2 space and water heating • $519,000 investment for annual savings of $69,000; • payback – 7.6 years, predicted life – 17 years. • Oquirrh 4 complex Phase II (2006?): ~ 250,000 ft2 of building area • $1,524,000 investment for annual savings of $123,800 • 12 ½ year payback

Utah Geothermal Working Group • Promote innovative development and effective use of Utah’s geothermal resources for direct use and power generation • Primary Emphasis - promote direct-use applications and small-scale geothermal power projects to stimulate rural economic development opportunities • Objectives (1) inform and educate members about geothermal resources and development in Utah, and (2) help remove barriers to geothermal development
