The “Bermuda or Devil’s Triangle” is an imaginary area located off the southeastern Atlantic coast of the United States, which is noted for a high incidence of unexplained losses of ships, small boats, and aircraft. Before Reading-background information 1 The Graveyard of the Atlantic >> Background Information Over 600 ships have been wrecked along this treacherous stretch of coast since the 16th century, and a few remain visible at times on the beaches. David Stick’s Graveyard of the Atlantic, Shipwrecks of the North Carolina Coast gives detailed accounts of these and other tragedies that were a daily occurrence.

  5. Before Reading-background information 1 Atlantis >> Background Information It is said that over 11,000 years ago there existed an island nation located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, which was the domain of Poseidon, god of the sea. When Poseidon fell in love with a mortal woman, Cleito, he created a dwelling at the top of a hill near the middle of the island and surrounded the dwelling with rings of water and land to protect her. The city of Atlantis sat just outside the outer ring of water and spread across the plain covering a circle of 11 miles (17 km).

  20. After Reading-story telling It should be pointed out that the U. S. Board of Geographic Names does not recognize the Bermuda Triangle as an official name. The “Bermuda or Devil’s Triangle” is an imaginary area located off the southeastern Atlantic coast of the United States, which is noted for a high incidence of unexplained losses of ships, small boats, and aircraft. Several theories are brought forth in this article to try and explain the Bermuda Triangle phenomenon. It is called a phenomenon because of the very strange occurrences that have taken place at almost the identical point and they happened over several occasions in an extended period of history. >> Story Telling

  21. After Reading-story telling How accurate are the reports? Maybe there is a logical explanation for the disappearances. Were the airplane pilots confused because the ocean water can look like glass and reflect the blue sky so the pilots started climbing to get altitude and flew directly into the ocean? Did their compass get magnetically changed and they then flew out to sea when they thought they were flying back to land? Then they ran out of petrol. Or was it a giant being from outer space making them disappear? Charles Berlitz is a famous writer, who is one of those trying to explain the triangle phenomenon. One of the theories advanced by Berlitz to explain the number of losses in the area is that outer space beings hunt human specimens for their “zoos”. However, do you believe it? >> Story Telling

  23. After Reading-story telling Almost everyday we may see something in the newspaper or on TV about the latest exciting developments in space exploration. There is an immense pride in our science and technology and a sense of its importance for the welfare of mankind. Not everyone, however, shares this feeling. Ever since space research began, it has been criticized as a huge waste of money and other resources, which might be used to help to relieve the suffering of the earth’s starving millions. It has also been felt that the space program might lead to the total destruction of the earth. Despite these disadvantages and potential dangers, the advantages are far greater. We have already succeeded in using satellites for communications, weather forecast and oil exploration and with further space research, more problems we are having now can be solved. For instance, with the success of space shuttles and the feasibility of living in other planets, we may solve the population problem on the earth. Space projects will also enable us to find a few chemical elements to cure presently incurable diseases. Space exploration contributes not only to the improvement of the quality of human life, but also to our understanding of the interdependence of all beings; and therefore, of the need to take better care of each other.
