  3. Korean War • Kim Il Sung – leader of N. Korea • June 25, 1950 – N. Korea crossed 38th • Domino Theory – theory that if one country in Asia fell to Communism, the rest would topple • China => Korea => Vietnam => Philippines???

  4. US Response • Truman put Douglas MacArthur in charge • Mac was in Japan as Gov • US went to the United Nations Security Council • USSR was absent • Protest - China • Unanimous vote- NK was aggressor • UN aid SK • Congress did not declare war; UN conflict

  5. Major Battles • UN forces crossed 38th parallel • China believed this was a threat to its security (Yalu River) • China led a counterattack against UN forces • Drove UN forces below 38th Parallel • Led to a stalemate – 1951-1953

  10. Results of war • 33,000 US soldiers killed in war • 1st war US forces fought in integrated units • Helped create a military industrial complex • Increased fed. Military budget • NSC-68 suggested this • Mil. tied w/ corporate and sci. communities • Employed 3.5 million Americans • Permanent mobilization of US troops • 1 mill. Soldiers stationed around world • Signed treaty w/ Japan – naval bases • Poisoned relations w/ China for 20 years
