Harris - Founder The first Rotary meeting was held in Chicago on February 23, 1905 when Paul Harris (who studied Law at University of Iowa) invited friends to a meeting to capture the friendly spirit he once felt in the small New England towns of his youth A forum where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form friendships “Rotary” comes from rotating meetings between offices First service project was constructing “privies” in downtown Chicago

The Rotary Foundation • Began in 1917 with $26.50 from Arch Klumps. • $814 million in assets in 2012 • Goal is $100 per member per year. • “One of the larger and best run Foundations in America” (Bill and Melinda Gates) “The Rotary Foundation is the cement that binds every one of us together.” - Calum Thomson, Scotland

The Rotary Foundation The Rotary Foundation transforms financial gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. • Last year, Rotary provided 70 million dollars in Grants for more than 1,100 projects worldwide • During the past 100 years, the Rotary Foundation has spent three billion dollars on life-changing, sustainable projects • 91% of donations to the Foundations go directly to support Rotary service projects around the world

  20. The Rotary Foundation- Polio • Rotary has helped fund the Fight to End Polio since 1988 (350,000 people contracted Polio in 1988) • Polio is 99.9% of the way to being eradicated. Polio will become only the second human disease in history to be eradicated worldwide. • During 2017, only 22 new diagnosed cases were reported in 2 countries – Afghanistan and Pakistan. • The cost to immunize a child against Polio is less than 60 cents.

  21. What is a Paul Harris Fellow? An individual that that over time contributes $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation Recognized by pin, medallion, and notations on Rotary postings Other designations for further PHF progression and major giver status

  22. What can a member expect from the club? Ability to socialize and share business interests with other business and professional men and women Ability to provide humanitarian efforts of time, talent, and treasurer through a collective far greater than what a single individual could achieve
