Lecture 1 • Thermodynamics is the goal of living things to control which reactions happen and how fast they happen.
Lecture 2 • Activation energy determines the rate of reaction; if activation energy is low, molecules need less energy to form products, and thus the rate of reaction will be higher. • Catalysts lower the activation energy • facilitates the reactions so reactants are more likely to collide and interact.
Lecture 3 • Catalysts that are made of proteins are called enzymes. These can be reused due to the fact that they are not altered by reactions they facilitate. • Phenylketonuria (PKU)
Overall • Thermodynamics is the goal of living things to control which reactions happen and how fast they happen.
Questions • For unfavored reactions, what type of energy and how much of it will be needed to cause the unfavored reaction? • How do biological systems make essential non-spontaneous reactions occur if they are unfavored? • Can catalysts be used for reverse reactions? • What classifies as an enzyme? The structure and formation or its job?
