  3. Background • CP 10 • Four month duration (July-November 2010) • Mission: • Provide medical care and infrastructure improvements in eight nations • Provide humanitarian assistance and disaster response SMEEs; aid in the event of a disaster

  5. Background • Diplomatic mission • Direct care and public health • Primary care, optometry, surgery, ob/gyn, dentistry dermatology, pharmacy, prev med, health ed • Training

  8. Daily Life • 12-16 hour days (0530 - 2200) • Meals (Wardroom or MREs) • Transportation • LCU or Helo to/from shore (if no port) • Vans • Clinic hours: 0800 – 1600 • Cleaning stations (if not manifested) • Team briefs • Mission briefs • 2 minute showers!

CP10 PHS 1st RotationHaiti and Colombia • Environmental Assessments: • 5 drinking water facilities (>20 water sources tested) • 2 waste-water treatment facilities • 6 solid-waste sites • 8 schools • 4 hospitals • 2 food establishments • Veterinarian Services: • Thousands of pets vaccinated and de-wormed • Health education • 54 nurses received tropical medicine training • Thousands received general hygiene training • Thousands received fluoride treatments and oral hygiene education • Hundreds of medical personnel received additional training • Pharmacy • Over 15,000 prescriptions filled • Thousands of children treated for intestinal parasites

CP10 PHS 2nd Rotation Costa Rica and Guatemala • Preventive Medicine • 4 drinking water facility assessments • 2 solid waste site assessments • 2 safety assessments • 1 restaurant inspection • 3 dw assessments at private establishments • Health education • Thousands of patients received education on basic hygiene, vectorborne disease prevention, chronic disease prevention • Pharmacy • 16,000 medications dispensed and over 600 de-worming treatments • Dental • 650 procedures (restorations, extractions, etc.)

CP10 PHS 3rd Rotation Nicaragua and Panama • Health Education • Preventive medical education on numerous topics from hand washing/basic hygiene, community disease prevention to vector born illness • Collaborated with local ministries of health to provide vaccinations • Pharmacy • 15,500 medications dispensed and over 500 de-worming treatments • Dental • Provided dental care to the indigenous population of Nicaragua and Panama under hazardous conditions. • Served as interpreter between non-Spanish speaking multinational, local providers and patients from host countries. • Extracted over 600 non-restorable teeth and placed over 50 restorations • Veterinarian Services • Worked with host nation vets to provide de-worming and basic vaccinations for thousands of animals (dogs, cats, horses, cows, monkeys) • Optometry • Provided ~1500 patient examinations, helping to dispense over ~1100 pairs of glasses

CP10 PHS 4th Rotation Guyana and Suriname Highlights: • Provided diverse public health assessments of hospitals, schools, slaughterhouses, factories (soda, bread), restaurants, water plant, residential water supplies, solid waste sites, etc • Presented findings in a roundtable with regional environmental health professionals in Berbice, Guyana • Participated in overnight stays in urban and rural locations • Provided mental health care both on and off ship • Worked on a shipboard influenza outbreak investigation with USN colleagues • Change in mission with diversion to Haiti!
