  1. Sermon 3Death Precedes Resurrection 1 Peter 3:13-22Page 1890 Living Against the Grain A Study of 1st Peter

  2. Last Week: Do you see the news of the resurrection as old news or current events? How does your lifestyle confirm your answer? What is the best part of the good news for you? What is the hardest part of the “bad news” for you?

  3. Empty Cross and Empty Tomb Jesus’ resurrection makes a resurrection for us possible as well. We gather here weekly to celebrate Jesus life, death, and resurrection as we consider our own death to self and new life in Jesus as a current event. We invite others to join us on the journey. Christianity is a religion of the empty tomb and empty cross for we believe that he has risen and one day so will we.

  4. This Way or That… • We have a fascination with resurrection and it is presented in many ways. • Frankenstein, Zombies, Ghosts, Vampires… • Has anyone here been resuscitated? • Quantum Leap? Awake in a new body. • How have you been raised from the dead? Changed or Unchanged?

  5. The Easter Message. • Jesus’ resurrection changes everything. • Others were raised from the dead but only Jesus is God who died to pay for our sins and rose again. • Death preceded resurrection for him and for us as well.

  6. Getting to Today’s Text • Peter began to talk about submission and following the example of Jesus’ suffering in 1 Peter 2:13-25. • Directions to wives and husbands about submission and being considerate are provided in 1 Peter 3:1-7. • Peter then returns to the topic of suffering in 1 Peter 3:8-22.

  7. 1 Peter 3:13-22 Page 1890 • 1Pe 3:13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear what they fear ; do not be frightened.” • How can we conquer the fear of persecution? • 15But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

  8. 1 Peter 3:13-22 Page 1890 • 17It is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 18For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, • We will suffer so suffer for doing good. • Verse 18 is our message today! • Death precedes resurrection. • We are now dead to sin and sin’s reign so we do not desire sin but the will of God (1 Peter 4:1-2) • Then comes an odd part…

  9. 1 Peter 3:13-22 Page 1890 • 19through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison 20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. • What? • NIV Study Bible Note: • Perhaps a more satisfactory view would be to translate: “And in that [resurrection] state, by means of (his) ascension [see v. 22, where the same verb form is used of Christ’s ascension] he made proclamation to the spirits in prison.” The latter phrase most likely refers to the disobedient spirits (“angels, authorities and powers,” v. 22). Thus Christ’s ascension “into heaven” (v. 22) was itself a victory proclamation to them (cf. Eph3:10).

  10. 1 Peter 3:13-22 Page 1890 • Vs 20 In it (Noah’s Ark) only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, • Now he speaks about being saved… • 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also — not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It (baptism in water) saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,22 who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

  11. Surrender, Submission, and Salvation • The Easter message is about the impact of Jesus’ death and resurrection. • Resurrection makes us a new creation instead of resuscitating our old life. • 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

  12. Taking It Home • What do you want them to say? • The Easter Message is a daily message. • Lived a new life not a resurrected old one. • Next Week: 1 Peter 4 and 5 Signs of Change
