The Biblical Basis For Coaching Paul:the Biblical “Mandate” for Coaching (Ephesians 4:11-13) “It was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare/equip God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up…”

The Biblical Basis For Coaching Barnabas:a Biblical “Model” For Coaching “When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.” (Acts 11:23,24) Holy Spirit: our “Mentor”What does the Holy Spirit do for us as coaches?

  4. “Jesus, Our Master Coach” He modeled--they watched as He demonstrated. (Luke 8:1ff) “The twelve were with Him…” He mentored—they did it together. He showed the disciples the how and the why of each step of the process. (Luke 8:4-15; 9:9-17; 9:37-43) He monitored —they did it, He watched. The disciples performed the task, and He assisted and corrected. (Luke 9:1-11, 27-43) “The apostles returned…they reported…” He motivated. He allowed the disciples to take responsibility for the ministry, continuing to coach and encourage him to improve. He celebrated successes with them. (Luke 10:1-23) “The harvest is abundant…go…I am sending you…” He multiplied. Now He encouraged them to minister and to train others…purified and empowered by the Holy Spirit! (Luke 10:1; Luke 24:49; Matthew 28:18-20, the entire book of Acts!) • What insights do you see about Jesus’ approach to coaching that you need to integrate into your ministry? • What other qualities about Jesus make Him our “Master Coach”?
