  1. Moving to Civil V8i Select Series 3 Robert Garrett, Bentley Systems Inc. Product Manager

  2. I Want to Start Planning for GEOPAK V8i Select Series 3… What do I need to set up?

  3. Decision 1 - Installation • You can have dual installations of Select Series 2 and Select Series 3. • Recommendations: • Dual Install • Roadway Designer projects (ird files) are not forward compatible. So, if you have a lot of work invested in a project, keep it in Select Series 2. • Site Modeler is removed in Select Series 3, so you might need to finish gsf projects in Select Series 2. • A dual install probably requires maintaining dual standards since many setup files are not backward compatible.

  4. Which Files Cannot be Shared Between Select Series 2 and 3. • Not Backward Compatible: • Feature definitions • Terrain Model Element Templates are not backward compatible • Seed Files – • Civil Formatting in DGN Settings are different. • Survey Settings are different • Corridor Settings • Design Standards

  5. What Things Do I Need First in My Select Series 3 Standards? • Seed Files – Update Design File Settings • Text and Dimension Styles - to support Terrain Models. • Setup New Civil Configuration Variables • Filters for Extract Graphics to Terrain

  6. What Things Do I Need First in My Select Series 3 Standards? • Set up Feature Definitions • Point • Linear • Surface / Terrain Models • Set up Element Templates • For Terrain Models • For Solids • For 3D line strings

  7. What Things Do I Need First in My Select Series 3 Standards? • Corridor Settings • Survey Settings • Roadway Template Libraries • Tweak for Feature Definitions • Tweak for Superelevation • Superelevation settings

  8. Design Files Settings Used By Civil • Angle Readout format is used by Civil Commands • Working Units > Advanced – Set Solids Working Area to 1 for best 3D modeling. • Civil Formatting – For Civil Commands

  9. Text And Dimension Styles • Used for labeling of contours and spots in: • Terrain Model Element Templates • Terrain Model Labeling Commands • Dimension Style is used for spots since it can store number decimals. • Dimension Styles reference and work together with a text style. • Can be configured to follow annotation scale.

  10. Civil Configuration Variables • Civil_Superelevation_Rules_Directory • Stroking for model: • Civil_Default_Linear_Stroking • Civil_Default_Profile_Stroking • Civil_Default_Curve_Stroking • Civil_Default_Station_Lock • Civil_Roadway_Template_Library • Civil_Survey_Stylefile • Civil_CivilCells_DgnLib_File • MS_DgnLibList

  11. Extract Graphics Filters • Filters – Store search criteria for a specific type terrain building block. (IE spots, breaks, etc.) • Filter Groups – Stores groups of filters for reusable one-step extraction of graphics into a Terrain Model. • Also, evaluate workflows of aerial survey group.

  12. Feature Definitions & Element Templates • Link to DDB for GEOPAK. • (XIN or PSS in InRoads or MX) • Review and edit properties • Add feature definitions for roadway surfaces/components. These will not come from link to DDB. • Add element templates for 3D model. • Add to MS_DGNLibList

  13. Corridor Settings Create at least 1. Probably at least 2. • Preliminary • Curve stroking off • Interval multiplier >1 • Critical sections off • Final • Stroking ON • Multiplier = 1 • Critical section ON

  14. Survey Settings • Mostly same settings as Data Acquisition, with a few new things. • Moved from DGN settings to DGNLIB. • New Settings to control default terrain model display. • New settings to control display of observations and setups.

  15. Roadway Template Libraries – Immediate Needs • Review Feature Definitions on Points • Review Superelevation Flag on Points

  16. Superelevation • GEOPAK SEP files are used. No modifications required. • AASHTO 2001, 2004 and 2011 supplied in the box. • C:\ProgramData\Bentley\Civil\Standards\8.11.9\en\Superelevation

  17. What Things are Less Urgent in My Select Series 3 Standards? • Workspace Preferences • Geographic Coordinate Systems – Take advantage of ground to grid coordinate adjustment factors. • Roadway Template Library – Additions for linear and surface templates • Design Standards • Review reports • Additional Feature Definitions for new workflows. • Civil Cell Library

  18. Workspace Preferences • User Specific, of course, but can review and make recommendations or defaults. • Control appearance of: • Manipulators • Survey locators • Superelevation objects • Heads Up Cursor

  19. Geographic Coordinate Systems – Ground to Grid • New in Microstation/Power Platform for V8i Select Series 3. • Allows definition of independent elevation factor for project specific coordinate systems • Tools > Geographic > Select GCS • After select standard GCS, click on Details to apply Helmert Transform. • Enter elevation factor in Helmert A.

  20. Roadway Templates – Add Linear and Area Templates • Linear Templates – Like sections in GEOPAK site modeler. • Area Templates – allow adding subsurface layers to terrain models. (parking lots, etc.)

  21. Design Standards • Horizontal Design Standards – design speed based checks for: • Min radius • Kinks • Spiral lengths • Vertical Design Standards – linked with horizontal. Design speed based checks for: • Curve length • Max and min slopes • AASHTO 2004 & 2011 included in the box

  22. Review Reports • XML based reporting. • Same as exists for roadway designer in SS2 • Style Sheets can be customized to meet your standards. • Custom SS2 style sheets can be used in SS3.

  23. Additional Feature Definitions • Commands such as Trace Slope can use a feature definition to control the symbology of the elements they create. • Over time you might want special feature definitions for these and other purposes. • In the beginning, though, use something you already have or just use Microstation active symbology.

  24. Civil Cell Library • Civil Cells allow creation and reuse of complex geometric constructions. • Start slow and build out over time.
