  2. What is the system unit? • The system unit (also referred to as a tower or chassis) is the main part of a desktop computer. • The system unit includes the motherboard, CPU, RAM as well as other components • The term System Unit is often used to recognize a difference between the computer and other devices, such as the monitor, keyboard, and mouse. • Motherboard: The core of the computer everything is connected to • CPU (Central Processing Unit): The brain of the pc • RAM (Random Access Memory): Holds all of the data the processor is using at a given time

  3. Why is the system unit important? • It is what you use to operate all system software • It is what makes up your computer • It allows access to anything on the computer • You can’t type without a keyboard and can’t do anything without a mouse controller

  4. Different types of System Software • Operating system: Harnesses communication between hardware, system programs, and other applications. • Device driver: Enables device communication with the OS and other programs • Firmware: Enables device control and identification • Translator: Translates high-level languages to low-level machine codes • Utility: Ensures optimum functionality of devices and applications

  5. Different types of System Software 2 • Middleware- provides services to software • Shells- user interface that helps get access to an operating system’s services • Window systems-software the manages different parts of display seperately

  6. What’s inside the system unit? • A microprocessor • Central Processing Unit (CPU) • ^^^it carries out the instructions the user sends it • A fan to cool all the components so it doesn’t over-heat and cause problems or potential disaster (fire) • Optical drive • Hard disk drive • Connectors and expansion slots

  7. What you need to know • Memory cards save all the data from your computer (storage, search history) • The power supply unit has two uses • Convert electrical power available at a wall outlet so the circuits can run • Delivers low voltages to each device due to their requirements

  8. What is the function of a system unit? • It protects all sensitive and easily damaged parts of a computer • The case is large enough to store extra things such as: • Second hard drive • Larger memory card • Higher quality video card • It is however harder to open up the system unit of a laptop, because it is designed to keep the software safer

  9. Any Questions???
