In Huaco, tall doors are still used. Long time ago, these doors were articulated without the current hinge system. Let’s see the superior part. The frame, called “quicio”, has a hole. the bolt, that is part of the door goes inside the hole. “sacar” meanstotake off. “Quicio” isanoldtermforframe. “sacar de quicio” meanstotake off fromtheframe. If the door is taken off from the frame, the door falls down, and it is difficult to put it back, therefore, this is a metaphoric way of expressing the exasperation of a person when he (or she) is taken out from the normal state. The expression was already used at the medieval period. Quicio, is related to the word “resquicio” (space between the “quicio”, or frame, and the door) and also with the word “desquiciado” (person or animal that has lost the tranquility or the patience, that has altered his normal state or is out of the “quicio”.
