  2. Community Connections SEEED FOCUS QUESTION: How do our practices and processes in outreach, entry, progress, and completion impact campus equity and student success at Skyline College? RESEARCH QUESTION: How does our current outreach effort make Skyline College accessible for potential first generation college students at local feeder high schools? MANAGEABLE RESEARCH QUESTION: Part One • What programs and services are local feeder high schools aware of? • How is this information presented? Part Two What general outreach efforts does Skyline College offer to Jefferson High School andSouth San Francisco High School?

Please Note: • Outreach events include, but not limited to: High school counselors breakfast, college fairs, lunch time tabling at feeder high schools, community events, Priority Enrollment Program, etc. • Partial data available for: 2009-2010; 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 • Significant Contributing Factors: • Due to budget cuts and funding, reduced staffing and hours devoted to general outreach efforts during 2009-2010; 2010-2011 and 2011-2012

STUDENT SURVEY - DEMOGRAPHICS Intended Participants • High school students from SSFHS and JHS Actual Participants • 160 high school students • 10th grade: 7 • 11th grade: 31 • 12th grade: 122 • 40 Jump Start potential participants • High schools include: South San Francisco, Jefferson, Oceana, Terra Nova, Thornton, Baden, Westmoor, Capuchino, El Camino, Quanah • 120 Non-Jump Start Applicants • SSFHS

  18. If yes, was the counselor successful in providing you with information on student services? • Of the 13% who have spoken to an outreach counselor, 73% have found it successful

Where is This Inquiry Taking Us? • This line of inquiry is allowing us to better understand the manner in which students most often receive Skyline College information and data. • We want to know more about the most effective and efficient method(s) to communicate accurate information to the community, specifically to high school students, faculty and staff. • Our next question is: How can we provide a consistent flow of accurate information regarding Skyline College's programs and resources via people and programs that most effectively interact with students. • Some further areas of inquiry may be to: • Follow up with faculty and staff surveys. • Seek out specific information within the original survey questions. • Survey other high schools to observe trends or patterns.

What Did We Learn? • Our local high school students hear about Skyline College from HS Staff and family/friends • In collecting data from high schools, the process needs to happen early • Surveys sparked questions that may be addressed through focus groups • General Outreach events and record keeping can be strengthened
