  2. Objectives • Identify causes and effects of the end of the colonial period in Africa • Describe issues following Nigerian independence • Describe issues following South African independence

Timeline (yesterday’s assignment) • 1910: South Africa gains independence from Britain • 1919: first Pan-African Congress was organized • 1920s & 1930s: some Africans are sent to study and attend universities in Europe and the United States • 1948: Apartheid begins in South Africa • 1960: Nigeria gains independence • 1963: Kenya gains independence • 1966: Riots in Nigeria lead to civil war

  4. Timeline (continued) • 1991: Apartheid ends in South Africa • 1994: All South African adults can vote

  5. Discussion & writing • How did Nigerian independence lead to riots and civil war? • Discuss the question in your group for 3 minutes. You may refer to your textbook (pp. 513-516) if you want to. • Each person needs to write a paragraph answering the question. One person will be selected to turn in their paragraph for the group.

  6. homework • Do not forget that the section review on p. 511 is due on Monday. • Students who have textbooks at home need to bring them back to school sometime next week, but they need to be turned in by Friday, 23 May.
