  1. Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood Education Resource • Mary McCallum

Why? • To review the existing HPS sexual health and HIV pack and develop new resource to be in line with Curriculum for Excellence and ensure wider focus on relationships and parenthood as well as sexual health • Resource primarily aimed at teachers however also of use for school nurses and CLD colleagues • Guide to what already exists, gives ideas on approaches for teaching about relationships, sexual health and parenthood for each age and stage from nursery to secondary school

  3. How? • Reasonable budget £19 k non recurring dedicated to this resource • Extension of secondment to sexual health from May- August 2009 ( 4 months) • Developed multi agency working group with a lot of help got ‘best group ever’ • 1st meeting held in in May 26th

  4. How continued… • At first meeting we brainstormed a framework for what the resource should include, with idea of sections, scope e.g. more emphasis on relationships, lots of local case studies, guidance on legal issues, and working with children with special educational needs

  5. 9 Key Sections • Introduction to relationships, sexual health and parenthood • Principles and aims of relationship, sexual health and parenthood education • Engaging with parents • Purpose of the 3-18 Curriculum for Excellence • Health and well being outcomes for each age and stage in the curriculum • Learning points for each age and stage • Case studies of good practice • Legal issues around relationship, sexual health and parenthood education • Comprehensive guide to relationships, sexual health and parenthood educational resources

  6. How continued… • Met with key people on a one to one basis to discuss content e.g. teaching points and case studies and began to pull draft together • Sections were emailed round the group as they were completed and taken apart and put back together again • Working group met again on 22nd July and 24th August to keep track of progress • At group meetings completed sections were discussed and agreed

  7. Consultation process • HIOs helping to co-ordinate the consultation with schools • Range of schools primary, secondary and special ed. Have been targeted across Aberdeen City, Moray and Aberdeenshire. Also gone out to school nurses, Public Health System and Sexual health network • The steering group have set a return date for the consultation with schools as 27th November. • Questionnaire has been set up using survey monkey so people can respond online

  8. What have we produced • Feedback so far very positive • 12 case studies of good practice • Range from example of a running a successful sex education session for parents to excellent powerpoint presentations to help deliver the SHARE programme
