  3. Background • SHARE is a sexual health and relationships programme produced by NHS Health Scotland. • SHARE is comprised of two publications: The SHARE educational resource and the SHARE trainer’s manual.

  4. The Need for SHARE • Teenage pregnancy rates in Scotland are amongst the highest in Europe. • Very high rates of unintended pregnancies and terminations. • Rising rates of Sexually Transmitted Infections. • In East Ayrshire, we have one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancies in Scotland. NHS Ayrshire & Arran

Educational Resource • The SHARE resource comprises 22 sessions each lasting about 45 minutes. • An education pack and a DVD. • Designed for use by professionals working with young people from S2 to S4. • A comprehensive, evidence-informed overview of sexual health and relationships education (SRE) • addresses complexities that surround this subject.

  6. Recognising, valuing and sharing diversity SHARE is designed to be inclusive and valuing of all young people. • Students who are, or have been, sexually active and those who are not; • Students who identify themselves as LGBT or are uncertain about their sexual orientation; • Students who have experienced pregnancy; • Students who have been abused or sexually exploited; • Those who have experience of a range of different family structures; • Students with physical or learning disabilities; • Students from a range of cultural, ethnic or faith differences.

  7. The Programme • 22 sessions, each focusing on a theme • Extension/options exercises • Teachers can add their own materials or customize • The programme should be delivered over three years for S2, S3 and S4 pupils • 6 to 8 lessons in each year.

Programme Lessons • Starting out • Relationships • Talking about sex • Bodies and sex • Being male or female • Learning about sex • Sexual activity, pregnancy and contraception • Sexual activity and STIs • Good communication skills • Condom use skills • Pressures and choices around sex • Resisting pressure • Experiences of first intercourse • Pregnancy and parenthood • Where to go for help

Curriculum for Excellence • SHARE meets the requirements for a comprehensive sex and relationships education programme as outlined in Respect and Responsibility (the national strategy for sexual health) and in Curriculum for Excellence. • The SHARE course addresses the Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthoodexperiences and outcomes within the Health and Wellbeing organiser of Curriculum for Excellence, and a number of others including Mental, Emotional , Social and Physical Health.

Benefits of Partnership Working • Young people’s learning in Sexual Health and Relationships Education benefits from partnership working with parents, carers, school staff, community staff and wider agencies. • The involvement of community partners, through their individual expertise and knowledge, engages pupils, enriches learning experiences and provides a consistent message. • Effective partnership working ensures that all agencies come together in order to support our young people and their families.

SHARE in East Ayrshire • In East Ayrshire Council, 3 days of SHARE training took place in February and in September2010 • It included a variety of partners including: Guidance teachers, School Nurses, Addiction Services staff, Family Support Workers, Community Link Workers , CLaD, College staff and Campus Police Officers • The training was delivered by NHS Ayrshire and Arran Sexual Health staff • Staff from NHS Addiction Services delivered information on the cross over between alcohol consumption and risk taking behaviour.

SHARE in East AyrshireWhat happened next? • Participants at SHARE training rolled out the training to their colleagues. • Guidance staff in eight secondary schools are now planning with their partners, which sessions will be delivered, when and by whom. • This will ensure consistency of message and true partnership working. • SHARE training is planned again for May 2011. • It is anticipated that refresher courses will be offered by NHS Ayrshire and Arran in the coming year to update colleagues.
