Monday, December 9th Entry Task Write out each definition and match it with the correct term. • Huge landmass in which all continents were once joined • Hypothesis that Earth’s continents were once joined in a single landmass and gradually moved apart • Theory that Earth’s lithosphere is made up of huge, moving plates that are carried around the planet by motions in the mantle.   7. What is a Plate Boundary? • A plate boundary is where the edges of two plates meet. • There are 3 types of boundaries: • Divergent • Convergent • Transform

  8. I. Divergent Boundaries • Occur where plates move apart. Most divergent boundaries are found in the ocean.

  9. Divergent Boundaries • In the ocean, divergent boundaries are also called spreading centers. • Mid-ocean ridges mark the sites where the ocean floor is spreading apart. • As the ridges continue to widen, a gap called a rift valley forms.

  12. II. Convergent Boundaries • Occur where plates push together. • There are 3 types of convergent plate boundaries.

  13. Convergent Boundaries • Continental-continental collision: • Occurs where 2 plates carrying continental crust (same density) push together. • If the plates keep moving, their edges crumple and fold.

  15. Convergent Boundaries 2. Oceanic-oceanic subduction: • Occurs where one plate with oceanic crust sinks, or subducts, under another plate with oceanic crust. • Deep-ocean trenches and island arcs form.
