  1. Regents Exam Lab Practical Review

  2. Station 1 Mineral Identification • Identify 2 minerals by name based on identification tests

  3. Station 2 Rock Classification • Using charts, you will classify a rock as igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic in one or more complete sentences. Igneous Intergrown crystals Bubbles Glassy texture Sedimentary Layers Visible sediments Fossils Metamorphic Distorted layers Visible flakes

  4. Station 3 Angular Measurement • Using a plastic hemisphere with the approximate path of the sun draw on it, you will locate the position of the sun at a given time. • You will measure the distance between the sun’s position and a fixed point on the dome.

  5. 6am – 12pm = ? degrees Sun moves at 15º per hour 6 hours x 15 degrees/hour= 90degrees 12 noon 2pm 9am 5pm East South 6am West 5pm 6am 9am 12 noon 2pm North

  6. 9am – 2pm = ? degrees Sun moves at 15º per hour 5 hours x 15 degrees/hour= 75 degrees 12 noon 2pm 9am 5pm East South 6am West 5pm 6am 9am 12 noon 2pm North

  7. 9am – 12pm = ? degrees Sun moves at 15º per hour 3 hours x 15 degrees/hour= 45degrees 12 noon 2pm 9am 5pm East South 6am West 5pm 6am 9am 12 noon 2pm North

  8. 12 noon 2pm 9am 5pm East South 6am West 5pm 6am 9am 12 noon 2pm North

  9. 5.9 cm

  10. Station 4 Mass Density • Using a scale, you will measure the mass of a mineral. • You will be given the density of the sample. • Using the mass you measured and the density given to you, you will calculate the volume of the sample.

  11. D = m / v D = m / v

  12. Station 5 Settling Time • You will drop beads of three different sizes into a tube filled with a liquid and measure the time that it takes for the bead to settle. • Three times for each size will be measured and averaged.

  13. 057 053 092 078 103 185

  14. 056 147 051 169 091 080

  15. Station 6 Graphing • Using the data collected from station 5 (bead drop) you will graph three data points. • Using the line drawn on the graph, you will determine the settling time for a theoretical bead of a given size.

  16. 4 And what about at 2.5? 3 seconds 3.2 seconds 2 And what about at 6? 1 1.6 seconds 1 2 3 4 5 6 centimeters

  17. A note on rounding and labeling • Read the station directions carefully • If it says to label your answer, then do it. • If it says to round to the nearest tenth, hundredth, etc., do it.

  18. Grams = g • Centimeters = cm • Degrees = º or degrees • Seconds = sec • Cubic centimeters = cm3 • Grams per cubic centimeter = g/cm3

  19. 7.58 seconds Rounded to the nearest tenth: 0:0158 7.6 sec Rounded to the nearest hundredth: 7.58 sec

  20. 4.00 seconds Rounded to the nearest tenth: 0:0400 4.0 sec Rounded to the nearest hundredth: 4.00 sec Not rounded- totally wrong: 4 sec

  21. Good Luck!
