  1. Essential Question: What data do scientists use to support the theory of evolution? Evidence of Evolution

  2. Vocabulary • Fossil Evidence • Homologous Structures • Analogous Structures • Vestigial Organs • Embryology • Genetic Evidence • Distribution

  3. Concepts • Fossil evidence • Genetic information • Studying different species

  4. Fossil Evidence • Related fossils in different rock layers can show how organisms changed over time. • Example: whales could have descended from land animals related to deer & hippos, by adapting to live in the water.

  5. …More Fossil Evidence • Scientists also believe fossil evidence shows a relationship between birds and dinosaurs, by studying a group of dinosaurs known as theropods.

  6. Fossil Evidence Video • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOKW_7KajCU

  7. Homologous Structures • Body parts of organisms that have….. • Similar structure, but • Not same purpose. • Indicate that organisms have evolved from a common ancestor.

  8. Homologous Structures • Example: human arm, bird wing, whale flipper – composed of similar bones, but used for a different purpose.

  9. Analogous Structures • Body parts that have a….. • Similar function, but • Different structure. • Shows evidence of separate evolution, not from a common ancestor. • Example: Bat wing, bird wing, insect wing.

  10. Vestigial Organs • Body parts that do not seem to play any role in the function of an organism. • Example: human appendix, pelvic bone in whale. • Can also be evidence of common ancestry.

  11. Embryology • The study of embryos(early stage in development of organism). • Embryos of related organisms develop in similar ways. • Could suggest a common ancestor.

  12. Video! • http://www.learn360.com/ShowVideo.aspx?SearchText=homologous&lid=18565884&ID=146630

  13. Genetic Evidence • Scientists study DNA for evidence of evolution. • The more similarities in DNA, the more recently the species evolved from a common ancestor.

  14. Distribution • The places where related species are found. • When organisms migrate to new environments, they may adapt and evolve into new species. • Example: plants & animals of the Galapagos Islands; finches adapting to each island.
