This program at Portland State University focuses on training undergraduate students in operating scanning electron microscopes (SEM) and Focused Ion-Beam microscopes (FIB) for multidisciplinary research. Participants engage in hands-on research projects with faculty from various disciplines to promote diversity in science and engineering careers. The 8-week REU Summer Program includes training, individual lab research, and a final symposium. In 2007, participants visited FEI Company for additional training on SEM.

Each participant learns to operate a scanning electron microscope (SEM) microscope and/or Focused Ion-Beam microscope (FIB) through hands-on training. • The objective is to promote the involvement of undergraduates-with an emphasis on under-represented minorities and female students-in research, higher education, and careers in science and engineering by actively engaging them in research projects with PSU faculty from various disciplines such as chemistry, physics, biology, environmental sciences, engineering. • The 8-week REU Summer Program consists of a full training week, participation and research in individual labs for 7 weeks, and a final research symposium. 2007 REU Participants on a field trip to FEI Company with Co-PI Prof. Erik Sanchez Rachel Shapiro and Maria Gutierrez training on the SEM
