Clarifications • Carbohydrates are MOST COMMONLY broken down by humans for energy • Fats CONTAIN THE MOST energy
What is in a Big Mac? Glucose • 32% Carbohydrates • The monomer of carbohydrates is __________. • 52% Fats • The monomer of fats is a __phospholipid__. • 16% Protein • The monomer of protein is an __Amino_ _acid_ _____. How can you show this in graph form?
What is in McD’s French fries? • 49% Carbohydrates • 46% Fats • 5% Protein
Section 2.4 Chemical Reactions
What is a chemical reaction? • Chemical reactions change substances into different substances by breaking and forming chemical bonds.
Reactants & Products • Reactants are the substances that are changed • Products are the substances that are formed or made. 6O2 + C6H12O6 6CO2 + 6H2O Reactants Products
Bond Energy • In order for reactants to change into products, bonds must break and new bonds must form. • The energy required to break a bond between 2 atoms is called bond energy.
Chemical Equilibrium • Some reactions only go in one direction, from reactants products. • But, many reactions in organisms are reversible and can move in both directions at the same time: reactants products. • When a reaction takes place at an equal rate in both directions, the reaction is in equilibrium.
Chemical reactions can release or absorb energy • Whether a chemical reaction releases or absorbs energy, a certain amount of energy is required to start the reaction. • The amount of energy that must be absorbed for a chemical reaction to start is the: activation energy
Exothermic Reactions • Energy is released! • The prefix “exo-” means “out” • Example: cellular respiration
Endothermic Reactions • Energy is absorbed! • The prefix “Endo-” means “into” • Example: Photosynthesis
Vocabulary Check • Making and breaking chemical bonds are examples of ____________. Bonds are broken in the ______, which are the chemicals that are changed during the process. Bonds are made in the ________, which are the chemicals that result from the process. If a reaction takes place at an equal rate in both directions, it is in ________________.
Vocabulary Check cont… • The amount of energy needed to break a bond is called the ____________. The ________ is the amount of energy needed to start a reaction. If a reaction absorbs more energy than it releases, it is called an __________ reaction. If a reaction releases more energy than it absorbs, it is called an __________ reaction.
Endo or Exo? 1.
Reactants and Products? 3. 2H2O2 2H2O + O2
