  6. Learning Outcomes… • ALL will be able to identify factors that influence health and development • MOST will know how different factors can affect an individual’s development • SOME will know how health related factors can influence their own development

  7. Child Development A child develops in the following ways...... Remember, P.I.L.E.S! Physical Intellectual Language Emotional Social needs

  8. Factors affecting the development of children and young people Environmental factors Diet Opportunities for play Housing Poverty and social disadvantage Parental health and lifestyle Emotional and social factors Childhood Infections

  9. Diet Possible conditions that may occur due to a poor diet Dental caries / tooth decay Which foods and drinks can cause this? Obesity What effects might this have? More likely to get colds and bronchitis Anaemia (Nutritional) Due to lack of iron, folic acid and B12 vitamin Which foods are good for supplying these nutrients?

  10. Childhood Ilnesses and Infections Diphtheria Tetanus Polio Whooping Cough Measles Meningitis Mumps Rubella Questions: What can cause these illnesses? What are the symptoms? What are the other common childhood illnesses?

  11. Poverty and social disadvantage Poverty is the greatest danger to the healthy development of children and young people • The child/young person’s diet may not be good. • A child/young person’s living conditions may be poor • The child may be smaller at birth • Children and young people may have to go without meals and clothes Questions: If a child’s living conditions are not good, how would their work and education suffer?

  12. Housing Homes which are damp and/or unheated Risk of infections Questions: What are the effects for children of living in poor housing? Low-income families are more likely to live in: Overcrowded conditions Some families housed in ‘hotels’, B&Bs etc: shared facilities Densely populated and unattractive neighbourhoods Few gardens and play areas

  13. Environmental Factors Air pollution Water pollution Noise pollution • Questions: • How might these affect a child/young person’s health and development? • If there is lots of air pollution where a child lives, what are the effects of this?

  14. Play Play is important for a child’s: • relationships • physical coordination • ideas and creativity • feelings Questions: • Give examples of some play opportunities that are available in nurseries? • How does play affect your P.I.L.E.S?

  15. Parenting • The health and lifestyle of a parent/carer can have a real effect on a child’s development, e.g. mum suffers from depression, dad is violent, mum is an alcoholic, dad is a drug addict. • Sometimes children have to take on a carer’s role.

  16. Parenting • Parents may not ‘be available’ (physically and emotionally) for their children. • Children may suffer physical neglect. • Parents may not show much love and affection • Some living conditions may be poor and/or unsafe. Questions: How would a child’s own health be affected if they adopta parent/ carer’s role?

  17. Think back to the nurseries you all planned in groups last week.....Imagine the children in your nursery. You are now going to think about factors affecting the development of those children....
