  2. What is a cohort study? A Cohort study is a study in which one or more samples (cohorts) are examined prospectively* to determine if a relationship exists between exposure to certain factors and specific “diseases”. *Prospectively – Likely to happen in the future.

  3. cohort studies question • Does exposure to X (smoking?) associate with outcome Y (lung cancer?)

  4. How to go about answering • The study would require the use of two groups.;A groups of smokers and non-smokers (the unexposed group). The groups are then followed for a set period of time and note differences in the incidence of lung cancer between the groups at the end of this examination time.

  5. Variables in this experiment • The independent variable in this experiment would be smoking. • The dependent variable in this experiment would be lung cancer.
