  1. Life of Women In Tseung Kwan O Most of the women living in Tseung Kwan O lead a happy life here! Most women are satisfied with their job and their boss. Women enjoy doing housework. An overwhelming majority enjoys their life-style and their work.

Report On The Life Of Women In Tseung Kwan O (A) Terms Of Reference On the Educational Activity Day of 25th January 2002, the English panel required the students to conduct a survey to investigate the daily life of women living in Tseung Kwan O. (B) Procedures The data included in this report was gathered by 18 students from Form 4C of YCH Lan Chi Pat Memorial Secondary School, who had interviewed women living in Tseung Kwan O at random. Only 69 respondents were analyzed and those who are not living in Tseung Kwan O were eliminated. ( C ) Findings1. Personal Information ( a ) Among the respondents, the longest period of living in Tseung Kwan O is 13 years and the shortest time is 1 year. Most of them have been living there for less than five years.

  4. ( b ) 46 % are housewives, 39% are housemaids and 6% are unemployed. Only 9% have a job other than that of a domestic helper. 2. Paid Work ( a ) Their working hours range from 5 to 18 hours. 57% have to work more than 10 hours a day.

  5. ( b ) How much time do you spend on travelling between your home and the place of work everyday? A large majority of them do not need to spend time on travelling between their home and the work place. ( c ) The majority earns less than HK $5000 per month and the highest salary is less than HK $ 35,000.

  6. ( d ) Most of them are satisfied with their job and their boss.

  7. ( e ) Although most of them say that there is pressure in working, a majority enjoys their work.

  8. 3. Housework ( a ) 82% of women have to do housework even though some may have a job. ( b ) Most of the families have 2-4 members. It is very rare to have more than 6 people in a family.

  9. ( c ) A large majority has 1-2 children to look after. ( d ) Most women have to cook at least 1 meal a day and quite a number of them cook 3 meals a day.

  10. ( e ) 16 The majority goes shopping everyday but there are a significant number of women who only do it once a week. ( f ) 57% clean their house everyday and 27% do it once a week.

  11. ( g ) About 80% enjoy doing housework and less than 20% say no. ( h ) 83% prefer doing housework other than working or doing other types of work because they feel that housework is enjoyable and without pressure.

  12. 4. Public Facilities ( a ) Over 60% think that there are enough shopping centers or markets in Tseung Kwan O and only 6.2% do not think so. ( b ) 44% agree that there are enough childcare centers for the local population and 32% take a neutral stance.

  13. ( c ) About 52% consider that there are enough schools for the children living in the district and 30% are neutral. ( d ) 45% strongly agree, and 14% agree that there are enough medical services for the population.

  14. ( e ) Over 52% think that there are enough recreational facilities and only 25% do not think so. The most popular facilities in the district are the library, parks, sports centers and playgrounds.

  15. (D) Conclusions 1. Most of the respondents settled in Tseung Kwan O, which is a new town and has flourished recently, only within this decade. 2. We have to note that the survey was conducted in the morning around a residential area in this district. Hence, most women interviewed are either housewives or domestic helpers. 3.The working women interviewed are most likely Filipino maids who work for many hours each day and earn less than HK $5,000 per month. Even though the working conditions are not favourable, most respondents are happy with their job and their boss.

  16. 4. Most families in Tseung Kwan O are nuclear families with 1 or 2 kids and some may have a maid to help them. The majority has to do a lot of housework, including cooking, shopping and housekeeping everyday. However, an overwhelming majority enjoys their life-style and their work. 5. A majority of women living in the district considers that the public facilities including shopping centers, markets, childcare centers, schools, hospitals and recreational facilities are enough for the local population. 6. We can conclude that most of the women living in Tseung Kwan O lead a happy life here!
