Basingstoke Demographics • Population estimate (2010) - 165,800 • Population predicted to rise by 3.3% between 2010 - 2017 • 27.2% of the Basingstoke and Deane population live in rural areas • Ethnicity - 89.4% white British, 1.1% white Irish, 3.3% white other, • Young population , large proportion of working age

Choosing a project • Basingstoke and Deane Health Profile 2010 identified need to target • Teen pregnancy • Child obesity • Hampshire County Council • target to reduce the teenage conception rate by 45% to 19.8 per 1000 young women aged 15-17 in 2010 • Since 1998 Hampshire’s conception rate has declined by 5.4% compared to the national reduction of 13.9%

  4. Sexual Health messages aimed at adults in their 40s, 50s and 60s Posters and leaflets, such as these from Hampshire Community Healthcare Trust, can be found in locations such as public libraries and GP surgeries in Basingstoke, in response to the rise in STIs among older age groups.

  5. Contraception and Sexual Health (CASH) Office Main demographic focus is for young people, ‘vulnerable’ people and people with complex needs…Why? Although 80% of women would prefer to see their GP for contraceptive needs, young people do not visit their GP, there are people who cannot get to their GP and people who have no GP In terms of active promotion, there is very little. Two issues were highlighted; Budget – income generated only! Public perception – they aren’t allowed to promote sexual health as it is seen as encouraging sex, they aren’t even allowed to signpost the clinic!! If our target is vulnerable people – what can we do to engage them??

Relevant Policies DH (1999) Saving Lives: Our healthier nation. - White paper, recognition of sexual health as an important health issue which needs to be tackled.DH (2000) The NHS Plan: A plan for investment. A plan for reform. - Sets out policies and proposes changes to the NHS. Proposed a new sexual health and HIV strategy to improve access to and links between services, introduce new screening programmes and ensure standards for primary and secondary prevention.DH (2001) Better prevention, better services, better sexual health - the national strategy for sexual health and HIV. - First national strategy for sexual health and HIV. Identifies inequalities.DH (2010) Equality impact assessment for national sexual health policy

Next Step… • Meeting with Basingstoke CASH Project to discuss current changes and their collaboration with Southern Health • Organising educational visits to local schools • Attending walk-in clinics • Researching nationwide projects that have been successful in Sexual Health • What is the future for CASH and how can we help?
