  4. Aims • The aim of this course is to introduce participants to Policy Deployment and the Policy Deployment Matrix tool. Objectives • To gain knowledge of Policy Deployment, the Policy Deployment process and why we use Policy Deployment. • To have the confidence to create a Policy Deployment Matrix. • To create an example Policy Deployment Matrix that you can use as a guide back in the workplace.

  5. Self introduction: • Name • Business area • Job role Chinese Whispers Players to stand in the setup of a business hierarchy (pyramid). First player (top of the hierarchy)to whisper the phrase given to the person/s at the level down in the pyramid, continue until the everyone at the bottom layer of the pyramid have all received the whisper. The bottom layer of the pyramid to say what they have heard.

Policy Deployment is a systematic approach to ensure that the company vision and strategic priorities drive progress and action at every level within that company. • It eliminates the waste that comes from inconsistent direction and poor communication. • It’s a step-by-step planning, implementation and review process. • It focuses on step change improvements not business as usual. • A proven technique that helps organisations focus efforts and achieve results. Remain Focused on the ultimate goal

To create alignment and focus across the organisation towards a shared goal of the company vision and strategic priorities. • To ensure the company vision and strategy is cascaded throughout the business at all levels. • So every employee knows their roles & responsibilities and what they are accountable for as an individual and as a team how they can support the company vision. • To ensure the business is achieving its strategic priorities and performance measures that have been agreed with shareholders and key stakeholders. • To support the delivery of the entity playbooks. • Focuses the entire business on a few vital goals rather than the trivial many.

Policy Deployment also known asHoshinKanri- • The word HOSHIN = Compass Needle (Direction) • The word KANRI = Management The Japanese words HOSHIN KANRI can be generally interpreted as Direction Setting. The origins of Policy Deployment date back to the 1950’s • Demming’s - Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) • Drucker’s - Management by Objectives The blending of these two methods is key to the success of the policy deployment process

  24. A change control process should be implemented for each PD that is created. This should include governance of the changes.

  25. 6 Problem Solving Use the escalation/handover process from your team hub if a problem outside of your influence occurs

Frequent review of actions • Ensure accountability and understanding • Plans are visible • Deliverables are SMART • Projects, Deliverables, and Results are linked to the business ambitions • Don’t allow for more changes than the entity/team can handle • Don‘t confuse PDM with BAU activity • Improving a Key Metric can be included in the PDM • Give enough time to complete the catchball process
