  1. Mangrove Animals Sec 2 N(A) Science

  2. Introduction Unbeknownst to many Singaporean city dwellers, Singapore’s shores contain a myriad of fascinating and observable organisms. At Chek Jawa, visitors can observe wildlife up close at the intertidal zone. The intertidal zone is basically the region between the highest level of high water spring tide and the lowest level of low water spring tides. Living life at the intertidal zone can be a challenging task; the organisms are exposed to air at the low tide but are submerged in seawater during high tide. Water is available regularly with the change in tides, but ranges from being freshly brought by the rain to highly saline during dryer conditions. Organisms living on the seashore are also in danger of being dislodged by incoming waves. Hence, intertidal organisms are able to live both underwater and on land, as well as cope with a large range of temperatures

  3. Instructions • Observe the picture of the organism provided carefully • Circle the words within the brackets which appropriately describe the organisms • Fill in the blanks with appropriate words • You may need to surf the Internet for additional information to answer the questions

  4. Fun Facts – Fiddler Crab (1) Fiddler crabs have (asymmetric / two / oversized) claws. (2)The (males / females / young) have one oversized claw which is used in signaling to members of the same species and also in courtship. (3) During courtship, the (males / females / young) wave their claws high up in the air and tap them on the ground in order to attract (males / females / young). (4) The (smaller / left / right / bigger) claw is used to pick up food from the ground and place it into the crab’s mouth. This movement presumably inspired the crab’s name.

  5. Fun Facts – Barnacle (1) Barnacles roam the sea when they are (young / mature / mating / gathering food), but affix themselves to hard surfaces (ships, rocks in the intertidal zone, etc.) as they (mature / mate / gather food). (2) Barnacles can extend a feathery leg (called a _______), to capture ________________ or gametes when spawning.

  6. Answers – Fiddler Crab • Fiddler crabs have distinct asymmetric claws. • The males have one oversized claw which is used in signaling to members of the same species and also in courtship. • During courtship, the males wave their claws high up in the air and tap them on the ground in order to attract females. • Fights between males commonly occur, which is presumably meant to impress females. • The smaller claw is used to pick up food from the ground and place it into the crab’s mouth. This movement presumably inspired the crab’s name.

  7. Answers – Barnacle • Barnacles roam the sea when they are young, but affix themselves to hard surfaces (ships, rocks in the intertidal zone, etc.) as they mature. • Barnacles can extend a feathery leg (called a “cirri”), to capture plankton for food or gametes when spawning.
