Immerse yourself in the groundbreaking world of the LHC experiment CMS at CERN with the advanced .500 Readout Boards. These high-tech boards are processing data from 10 million Silicon Detector strips at a mind-blowing speed of 10 Terabits per second. This multi-million pound project, undertaken over several years, was meticulously designed, tested, and implemented by the Technology BU/Electronics Div. in collaboration with PPD, Imperial College, and CERN. The system has been successfully delivered to CERN ahead of schedule, showcasing its cutting-edge capabilities. Featuring large and complex double-sided 14-layer PCBs with 6K components including dozens of fine-pitched BGAs, the boards enable massively parallel FPGA digital processing, ADCs, and optical receivers. The manufacturing process was a very demanding challenge, executed in partnership with UK industry, notably eXception EMS Ltd, a recipient of the CMS Gold Award for Industry at CERN in 2006. Boards are now boxed and ready at RAL, with a quarter of the final system commissioned at CERN in January 2006.
