  3. Sprinkles of Fairy Dust! • A young woman had been working on establishing a homeless shelter in her community before her family’s house burnt down. They lost everything in the fire and were left homeless themselves. She was awarded a grant to help her family get back on their feet. • In the process of escaping an abusive marriage, a young lady was granted funds to help her make a deposit on her own apartment. • After quitting her job with benefits in order to go back to school , a woman found herself in a tough situation when she was then diagnosed with Leukemia and wet macular degeneration. The funds provided will assist her in paying off medical bills. •  A grant was made to a woman living in a domestic violence center who had been struggling to pay her ill daughter’s medical bills. With the gift she was able to make a deposit for her own apartment. • An elderly, retired woman had to start working again after her husband was diagnosed with a terminal illness. She worked part time and cared for him. Unfortunately, she had to have shoulder surgery and could not continue her job while she was recovering. A grant will help her through this tough time. • Suffering from many health problems, a woman found her memory getting progressively worse. Her doctors suggested she take a trip to visit specialists, however, she was not able to drive and her car wouldn’t be able to make the trip either. She had to rely on a friend and a rental car to get her there. The funds will assist her with renting the car, as well as gas and lodging.

  7. Update The Fairy Godmother’s Fund is an endowed fund at the South Dakota Community Foundation. It provides funds to help improve the health and well-being of South Dakota women with limited resources and helps to address immediate short-term critical needs. The funds are permanently endowed and the earnings are available for distribution. The Fairy Godmother’s Fund was started in January, 2009. It was announced at the 1st annual Women’s Lifestyle Conference. At the conclusion of the Conference, it was announced that almost $12,000 was raised to begin the Fairy Godmother’s Fund. Since that time, the fund has grown to more than $58,000 from more than 300 different donors. The Advisory Board, made up of women from all across the state of South Dakota, has granted nearly 20 wishes since its beginning. Through your generous contributions, we can continue to help dreams come true to those women in need. Thank you! ginger@sdcommunityfoundation.org

  8. Fundraising Tip Looking for an easy way to raise money for the Fairy Godmother Fund? Once a month invite ten friends out to lunch at a local restaurant. In the invite tell them you are meeting for lunch and there will be no officers or bylaws—only conversation and fundraising for a charity, specifically the Fairy Godmother Fund. Also tell them to bring lunch money and ten dollars. This works well for individuals who would like to attend but need to return to work in a short time. This is just a suggestion, come up with your own idea that works for you!
