  1. Leading up to the War • Japanese Imperialism & Fascism. • Japan was a small island country. They had to import many natural resources > Expansion • South-east Asian Empire. • Manchurian Crisis. • Japan join the Axis alliance (Germany & Italy)

  2. War with America • Japan was worried that the US would try and stop them from taking over countries in Southeast Asia. • They decided to attack the US Navy hoping they could sink enough ships to keep the US from ever attacking Japan. 

  3. Pearl Habour, HawaiDecember 7, 1941 • Surprise aerial attack on America’s Pacific fleet. • Deceived the U.S by telling they wanted peace. • Decoding Japanese messages. Americans were aware of possibility of War. • A large flight of planes was detected by radar screen, but was ignore. • It was a Sunday, most of the men were asleep. • The ships were moored next to each other. Perfect targets.

  4. Outcome • This attack did not have the effect the Japanese had hoped for. • The US joined the Allies in World War II the next day. • The attack at Pearl Harbour united the Americans with the goal of defeating the Axis powers, especially Japan.
