  2. Significance of the Title • On the day Darnay is supposed to be executed there are a total of fifty-two people that are supposed to go to the Guillotine

  3. Characters • Charles Darnay • Syndey Carton • Lucie Manette • Doctor Manette • Mr. Lorry • Barsad

  4. Summary • Charles is in his cell trying to come to grips with his death, taking note of each hour as it passes • Charles writes a long letter to everyone but Carton • Carton visits Darnay in his cell and tricks him into switching clothes with him • He has Darnay write a letter that is not dated or addressed to anyone • He drugs Darnay with the substance he bought from the chemist and has Barsad take Darnay out to the carriage

  5. Summary Continued • Lucie, Doctor Manette, Little Lucie, and Darnay escape through the country side using Carton’s papers for Darnay • The whole time they are watching for persuit

  6. Literary Devices • Repetition: “He walked up and down, softly repeating their names to himself. The worst of the strife was over. He could walk up and down, free himself from distracting fancies, praying for himself and for them.”(363) • Metaphor: “They were in number as the weeks of the year.” (360) • Verbal Irony: “’this is the day of my death!’” (362)
